Discover Acque Fredde
Accommodation in Acque Fredde
Acque Fredde is shaped by its railway history and several connections to routes to Pila. The former railway line began in the village and ran through the Drinc Tunnel, while a historic access trail and another route also include Acque Fredde. Local transport history also includes a former intermediate station and a viaduct on Regional Road 18. Gressan offers another perspective: some details relate to the municipality as a whole, not just Acque Fredde.
The historic railway connection
The twelve-kilometre railway line began in Acque Fredde and connected Cogne with Aosta. It ran through the Drinc Tunnel. The line, which connected Cogne with the steelworks in Aosta, opened in 1922.
After the Drinc Tunnel, the railway continued halfway up the slope. Several short tunnels lay along the section before the line reached Cogne. Thus, the route along the slope beyond the tunnel is also part of the history of this connection.
The former Acque Fredde intermediate station is in Gressan. Acque Fredde was also the terminus of a cable car coming from Aosta. The railway line and the cable car represent two distinct historical transport connections: the railway began here, while the cable car ended here after coming from Aosta.
Paths and routes connected to Pila
In 1937, a historic CAI access trail to Pila ran via Cerise, Acque Fredde and Pertzé. This sequence of places should be understood as a historic route connection, not as equivalent to a present-day route.
A route from Aosta to Pila passes through Gressan, Acque Fredde and Charvensod. Unlike the historic route from 1937, this route includes Charvensod as a named waypoint, while that historic route includes Cerise and Pertzé. If you are considering the route from Aosta to Pila for a current outing, check local conditions.
The S21 path starts in Acque Fredde, runs below the former mining railway and then crosses the regional road. If you are planning to hike or cycle the path, check the current local conditions.
Acque Fredde within the municipality of Gressan
The Acque Fredde Viaduct is located at kilometre 13+980 on Regional Road 18 to Pila. This places the structure at a specific point on the road; current traffic conditions should be considered separately.
At the municipal level, the Gressan area includes orchards on the valley floor and the Gargantua moraine. The higher parts of the municipality include the Pila ski area, at approximately 1,800 metres. Gressan therefore encompasses both features of the valley floor and a ski area at a higher elevation.
For trip planning, these can be considered at two different scales: Acque Fredde is the starting point of the railway line and the S21 path; the orchards, moraine and ski area describe the municipality of Gressan. If you are looking for hotels in Acque Fredde, you can first decide whether the local transport connections or the municipality’s broader landscape and elevation are more important for your trip.
