Chateau brings together several distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: the exhibition at the Mont Avic Nature Park Centre, medieval architectural history and a hike to Lago Vercoche. There is also the Moulin circular cross-country ski trail, an option between Château and Chardonney. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether nature interpretation, historic buildings or outdoor activities will be the focus of your time in the area.

Nature and landscape

The visitor centre of Mont Avic Nature Park is located in the Fraz Chateau hamlet of Champorcher. It is housed in Villa Biamonti, a building constructed as a tourist residence at the beginning of the 20th century. The centre focuses on the particularly interesting geological and morphological features of the Dondena Valley. The exhibition illustrates them with photographs, finds, dynamic models and thematic maps.

Geology and morphology are not interchangeable terms: geology focuses on the nature and structure of the landscape, while morphology focuses on its forms. Together, the two terms describe different perspectives on the exhibition’s subject. This distinction helps keep the exhibition’s two themes separate.

Tower and local history

The medieval square tower was built in the 11th century at the initiative of the Lords of Bard. It served as an observation post in the 12th and 14th centuries. After being damaged in 1311, the tower was restored in 1320. The tower’s history thus includes construction, use and repair as distinct phases. Its square ground plan describes its form, while its observation function describes its historical use; the restoration, in turn, marks a later intervention.

The Church of San Nicola also has a clearly defined building history. Giovanni Ferro, also known as Jean Fer, remodelled and enlarged it between 1728 and 1732. It was probably the castle’s chapel. Inside the church is a painted and gilded Baroque wooden altar by Giovanni Battista Gilardi, dating from 1741. The names Giovanni Ferro and Jean Fer refer to the same architect; the altar’s material, decoration, artist and year are specified. This makes it possible to distinguish the building work carried out between 1728 and 1732 from the later-dated furnishing. Painting and gilding are two decorative features of the wooden altar; the Baroque style adds its art-historical classification to these specific characteristics.

Hiking and cross-country skiing

Two routes cater to different ways of getting around. The Chateau–Lago Vercoche hike starts in Chateau and leads to Lago Vercoche. The Moulin circular ski trail is a cross-country ski loop with a total length of 5 km between the hamlets of Château and Chardonney. The distinction is useful when choosing: the hike has a stated destination, while the ski trail is specifically described as a loop with a total length. You can therefore compare the hike to Lago Vercoche with a five-kilometre cross-country ski loop, rather than comparing only the activity names. If you are planning to use the ski trail, check snow and operating conditions separately.
