The hamlet of Gratillon lies at an altitude of 1,052 metres. A working mill and the history of the school offer two different perspectives on the place: the mill is part of the present, while the school’s history goes back a long way. When choosing a hotel, these themes may matter as much as whether you are primarily interested in culture, crafts or landscape.

School History and Craftsmanship

In 1782, the residents of Gratillon and Ferrère established the school of Gratillon. They were authorised to use funds from the Palm Sunday alms for teaching. This gives us not only a founding year, but also specific information about how lessons were funded. A photograph dated 27 May 1926 shows pupils at the school of Gratillon with their teacher, Émilie Junod. The image captures the schoolchildren and their teacher at a moment in history; the institution founded in 1782 represents an earlier chapter in the school’s history.

Patrizio Berthet’s work also offers a tangible connection to craftsmanship. He first took part in the Fiera di Sant’Orso in 1968. His furniture is made using strictly traditional craft methods and finished with hand tools. The information highlights two aspects: the date he began taking part in the fair and the meticulous craftsmanship of his furniture.

Collections and Language

The Museo Cerlogne in Saint-Nicolas displays works and personal belongings of the poet Jean-Baptiste Cerlogne, as well as those of other past authors who wrote in the local dialect. The René Willien Study Centre is dedicated to preserving and promoting Franco-Provençal patois and has an extensive specialist library. In Lyveroulaz, the Museo Gerbore is housed in the historic Maison de la Tôr building, where around fifty agricultural machines from the 1950s are on display. The collections focus on different subjects: literature and dialect, language preservation, and agricultural history. If you are planning a museum visit, check the current opening hours in advance.

Geological Landscape and Trails

The Geosite Route near Saint-Nicolas offers close-up views of eroded gullies and small, deeply incised valleys. The Saint-Nicolas area is also home to an extensive glacial deposit with ravines and earth pyramids. Along the route, after descending and following the paved road for a short stretch, you reach a small square. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the ravine and the village of Saint-Nicolas. Check local trail conditions before setting out.

Bois de la Tour is a protected natural area with scenic value, where the main tree species of the Aosta Valley can be found. The circular educational trail features information in Braille and a handrail for visitors who are blind or visually impaired. These specific features may be important when planning your visit; check conditions on site beforehand. The Gratillon–Persod hiking trail is listed in a regional plan to restore it to a walkable condition. Here, too, it is advisable to check the current trail conditions before planning a hike.

Art Project and Travel Connections

The tourism project L’AttraversArt envisaged a route of about ten kilometres, with seven significant stops and artworks planned for display outdoors at each one. The proposed route was to start in the centre of Saint-Nicolas and reach Vétan in the municipality of Saint-Pierre. If you are including the project in your travel plans, check the current status of the installations and trail conditions.

A road that branches off to the right at an altitude of 1,041 metres leads to the hamlet of Gratillon. A historic cycling reference is the fourth stage of the 61st Giro della Valle d’Aosta: in 2025, it followed the SR 22 through Saint-Nicolas (Gratillon) at an altitude of 1,011 metres. When planning your trip, the specific elevation of Gratillon and a dated cycling route reference thus offer different points of orientation.
