La Thuile: Skiing, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in La Thuile
When looking for a hotel in La Thuile, you can start by sorting by travel theme: Espace San Bernardo, Lago Verney, mountain bike routes and cultural destinations each offer a different focus. There are also different approaches to hiking – from trails with designated difficulty levels to routes featuring historic sites. Think about which activities you want to shape your stay, and use the specific differences to guide your travel planning.
Ski Area and Cycling Routes
The Espace San Bernardo ski area has 152 kilometres of pistes. It connects Italy and France with a shared international ski pass. If skiing is the deciding factor for your trip, this gives you both the size of the ski area and its cross-border character.
For mountain biking, the Natural Trail Area and La Thuile Bike Park have a combined total of 170 kilometres of routes and trails. This stated distance applies to both areas together. Alongside the ski area, this offers a dedicated focus for visitors looking to build their trip around mountain biking.
The Museo a Cielo Aperto di La Thuile also offers different ways to explore its routes: on foot, by bicycle or e-bike, independently or with the help of a guide. It includes 15 sightseeing routes for trekking and three e-bike routes. Route availability may vary by season, so take this into account when planning.
Lago Verney and Hiking
Lago Verney lies at an altitude of 2,088 metres, covers more than 20 hectares and is one of the largest glacial lakes in the region. It can be reached by car from La Thuile when the Passo del Piccolo San Bernardo is open. Since the drive depends on the pass being open, it is advisable to check its status before planning your trip.
Several hiking trails with different difficulty levels start at the lake. This information can help you choose a route to suit the demands of your hike, without treating all the trails as alike. By contrast, the Museo a Cielo Aperto routes include both trekking and e-bike tours; their availability may vary seasonally.
Near La Thuile are the Cascate del Rutor: three waterfalls fed by water from the Rutor Glacier. The hike there follows alpine trails and old mule tracks. An iron bridge offers a view of the third waterfall. This destination can therefore be identified by its waterfalls and the character of the route described.
Historic Trails and Cultural Sites
The route Trekking in Ancient History is more than two kilometres long and forms a loop around the Passo del Piccolo San Bernardo. Along the way, it passes Celtic cult remains, former Roman mansiones, sacred columns and medieval hospices. Traces of wars and historical finds thousands of years old are also among the sites along the route. The loop thus brings together a variety of historical traces on a single route.
For a cross-border hike, the Cammino di Saint Martin di Tours starts in La Thuile and leads to Saint-Germain di Séez in France. Its start and finish give this trail a different character from the loop around the pass: here, the route crossing the border is the defining feature.
Another cultural stop is the Maison Musée Berton. It preserves the appearance of an elegant residence in the Aosta Valley; the rooms have been kept as the owners arranged them. The museum preserves books, ceramics, sculptures, prints and inlaid furniture in its rooms. When planning, you can thus distinguish between historic trails outdoors and a look at preserved rooms and collection objects.
