Lignan can be explored through several specific travel interests: a protohistoric settlement on a completely isolated rocky outcrop, the Planetario di Lignan and routes for outdoor activities. The settlement is located on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,546 m; the terrain drops steeply towards the Vallone di Saint-Barthélemy. The altitude identifies the location, while the steep drop describes its relationship to the Vallone. For travellers interested in early settlement history, the settlement is a distinct focus alongside astronomy and tours.

A show at the Planetarium

The Planetario di Lignan offers immersive shows lasting about an hour. Using digital 4K full-dome projection, they explore the celestial bodies of the universe. The approximate duration gives you a useful guide for planning your time; the projection across the entire dome defines the format. This makes it easy to consider the show as a standalone activity. For routes, by contrast, distance and elevation figures are the main considerations: the planetarium event focuses on astronomical content, while cross-country skiing and mountain tours offer outdoor exercise.

Cross-country skiing and tours compared by altitude

The Saint-Barthélemy Gran Tor cross-country ski network includes a 30 km circular route as well as ten shorter routes. This gives you a specified loop alongside shorter alternatives. If you want to compare routes by distance, the circular route is the clear benchmark; the ten shorter routes are additional options in the network. The Centro Sci Nordico & trekking Saint-Barthélemy is located in Fraz. Lignan, Nus.

For tours, the activity type and altitude help you compare options. The snowshoe route to Tsa de Fontaney starts in Lignan at 1,647 m, leads to Tsa at 2,307 m and has an elevation gain of 660 m. The hiking route to Bivacco Rosaire Clermont also starts in Lignan, at 1,627 m, and leads to its destination at 2,692 m. The starting points are 20 m apart; the Bivacco destination is 385 m higher than Tsa. The routes therefore differ both in activity type and destination altitude: one is a snowshoe hike to Tsa, while the other is a hiking route to the Bivacco. If you are considering both during your stay, you can weigh up the activity type and the respective starting and destination altitudes. The difference between the starting and destination altitudes on the hiking route is 1,065 m; on the snowshoe route, it is 660 m.

Getting around Lignan

One specific traffic restriction applies to the road section between Lignan’s church square and the Osservatorio Astronomico: it is closed to unauthorised vehicles. If you plan to drive along this route, take the restriction into account and assume that your vehicle needs authorisation.
