Valsavarenche – Nature, Wildlife and History
Accommodation in Valsavarenche
Valsavarenche lies in the heart of Gran Paradiso National Park. Visitors can discover different aspects of the area through its visitor centers, historic trails and mountain activities. Highlights range from exhibits about individual animal species to the history of alpine rural culture; along the trails, you’ll encounter both royal hunting history and a variety of landscapes.
Visitor Centers and Wildlife
The I preziosi predatori visitor center is dedicated to wolves. Its documentary section includes two stuffed wolves, interactive videos, and selected texts and websites.
At the Acqua e Biodiversità center in Rovenaud, indoor and outdoor visitor routes pass multimedia installations, videos and aquariums. Three otters live there; check the latest presentation details before your visit. In Dégioz, the visitor center explores predators, with a particular focus on the lynx. This lets you distinguish between a clear focus on wolves, the biodiversity center with its aquariums and otters, and a focus on predators centered on the lynx.
Historic Trails and Alpine Landscapes
A large number of the trails still used in Valsavarenche today were laid out by the Savoy kings for hunting. The history comes to life on the route from Dégioz to Orvieille: it follows a historic royal mule track to the former royal hunting lodge at Orvieille. The focus here is on the area’s former use for hunting.
The trail to the Federico Chabod refuge passes through larch and Swiss stone pine forest before reaching an alpine meadow and the refuge. Compared with the route to Orvieille, this trail follows a different sequence: there, the historic mule track and former hunting lodge define its character; here, forest, alpine meadow and mountain refuge alternate.
A guided tour of the rural hamlet of Rovenaud also explores the history of Valsavarenche and alpine rural culture. If you’d like to include this experience in your plans, arrange a time in advance.
Activities on Rock and Ice
On the rocky banks of the Savara stream, Le Gordze du Terré adventure park offers canyoning and climbing. Check its current operating arrangements before your visit. At the Valsavarenche Ice Park, you can try ice climbing with mountain guides; special courses and practice days are also available. This mountain activity is seasonal, so check whether it is running before your trip.
