Adelfia brings together two historic centers, buildings from different periods, and festivals that can help determine when to visit. When looking for a hotel in Adelfia, start by deciding what matters most: would you like to focus on the town’s history, or plan your stay around one of its patron saint festivals? The names Canneto and Montrone offer a guide to the area’s distinct architectural and festival histories.

Historic centers and architectural history

Adelfia’s two historic centers were established around the year 1000, a short distance from each other. In Canneto, the Torre Normanna stands in the district’s historic center. It was built between 1147 and 1153 at the behest of the feudal lord Alfonso Balbiano and served defensive purposes over the centuries. In Montrone, the Chiesa Madre San Nicola is located in the district’s oldest part. It dates to the 18th century: construction began around 1711 and took about 15 years. On September 23, 1726, the church was blessed by Giovanni Battista Venovelli of Matera. The tower in Canneto and the church in Montrone thus represent different periods in the town’s history.

Another historic building is Casina Don Cataldo, also known as Castello dei Fascina. The original residential tower was built between 1390 and 1396 by Nicolò Dottula, one of Montrone’s first feudal lords. Between 1652 and 1696, the fortified manor house was transformed into an aristocratic residence thanks to Marchese Luigi Biachi-Dottula. The building illustrates the transition from a fortified home to a residence.

The Cappella della Pietà, known as Madonella, is also part of the town’s history: Giuseppe Maria Capecizurla had it built in fulfillment of a vow. Together, the tower, parish church, residence, and chapel connect architectural history with religious tradition, without focusing on a single building or period.

Patron saint festivals and their dates

The Festa Patronale di San Trifone takes place every year from November 1 to 11 in Adelfia-Montrone. The festival includes a procession through the town and a fireworks competition in the early afternoon that lasts about three hours. The procession and competition are separate events within the same festival; the fireworks display may vary from year to year.

The Festa Patronale di San Trifone also features specially set-up street stalls. They offer lamb chops known as “costatine scottadito,” grilled offal known as “'nghimmiredde,” celery stalks, slices of provolone, and local wine. These foods and drinks are associated with the festival; the offerings may vary.

Another occasion is the Passion of Christ pageant staged by the Amici di Adelfia group on Holy Tuesday. It takes place along the town’s streets. Around 150 actors and extras, along with numerous costume, sound, and lighting specialists, take part. It is based on an adaptation of a text by don Peppino Diana. Before planning a trip, check whether the event is being held that year.

The Festa di Maria SS. della PietĂ  takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. The following Monday, a procession carries the statue to the Cappella della PietĂ  and then back to the Chiesa Madre. The procession route thus connects the chapel, whose origins are linked to a vow, with the church in Montrone.

The town and planning your stay

Adelfia lies near the lower slopes of the central Murge. The local transport routes can also help you find your way around: the Strada Statale 100 is Adelfia’s main road connection and runs east of the built-up area. The Bari–Putignano railway line, which is operated under concession by Ferrovie del Sud Est, physically separates Canneto and Montrone.

The dates of the festivals may determine when to visit; those more interested in architectural history will find different historical points of interest in the two districts. If you are traveling for a festival, check the program for that year’s edition.
