Gioia Del Colle: Castle, Culture and Mozzarella
Accommodation in Gioia Del Colle
Gioia del Colle brings together a historic castle and archaeological collections with a long tradition of mozzarella and Primitivo wine. The surrounding countryside and local events are also among the town’s many facets. The topics below can help you decide whether a stay here suits your interests before you choose a hotel in Gioia del Colle.
Castle, Collections and Architectural History
The Castello Normanno Svevo dates back to the Byzantine period. It acquired the appearance still visible today under Riccardo Siniscalco d’Altavilla in the 12th century and under Frederick II after his return from the Crusade of 1228–1229. Of its original four towers, two remain: the Norman keep de’ Rossi and the Torre Imperatrice. The castle’s history of construction thus includes both its Byzantine origins and its later transformations under the two rulers.
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale is housed in the castle. It displays finds from the archaeological site of Monte Sannace, dating from the 6th to the 3rd century BC. The Parco Archeologico di Monte Sannace, an archaeological park described as the largest known Peucetian settlement, is also near Gioia del Colle. The museum and park offer different ways to explore the area’s ancient history.
Another collection is housed at the Pinacoteca Javarone, where 25 works from the Javarone-Rizzi bequest are on permanent display. The Chiesa Madre – S. Maria Maggiore takes visitors back to a different era. Riccardo Siniscalco had it built outside Gioia del Colle’s city walls in the late 11th century and dedicated it to Saint Peter. Visitors can also admire Byzantine architectural structures in the Borgo di S. Nicola.
Mozzarella, Wine and Olive Oil
Mozzarella Gioia del Colle DOP represents a production tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation for more than a century. A documentary film by Istituto Luce, produced in Gioia del Colle on 28 August 1950, also attests to its historic presence in the town. The city is part of the protected production area for Mozzarella Gioia del Colle DOP. As for wine, Gioia del Colle Primitivo DOP must be made exclusively from Primitivo grapes.
For an insight into another type of food production, there are four olive mills where visitors can take guided tours. These tours cover the entire production chain, from olive tree to finished product. If you would like to include a tour in your travel plans, ask the olive mill in question about taking part.
Traditions and Event Programmes
Le Fanòve d'Sciò is a traditional custom in Gioia del Colle. It centres on the processional lighting of four bonfires. The fourth edition in 2026 includes tastings of typical local dishes and Primitivo di Gioia del Colle along the route. The Gioia Festival celebrates Mozzarella Gioia del Colle DOP and the cheesemaking tradition. The programme for its 2026 edition includes a tasting stand and demonstrations of stretching and shaping mozzarella.
The Palio delle Botti also features activities centred on regional products: the 2026 edition includes jam-making workshops at educational masserie. Programmes and dates for future editions may vary. If a festival is the deciding factor for your trip, check the dates for the relevant edition.
Rural Landscape
Beyond its collections and events, the rural landscape shapes Gioia del Colle’s character. It includes ravines, lamie and forests. The landscape also features masserie dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The area’s history therefore extends beyond the castle’s architectural history to include the heritage of the surrounding countryside.
