Discover Impalata
Accommodation in Impalata
Impalata can be explored through two themes: religious sites and landscape. Its ecclesiastical landmarks include the Chiesa San Michele in Frangesto and the Chiesa di S. Maria Addolorata; outdoors, the Loggia di Pilato hill and the Impalata Trail help you find your way. When planning your stay, you can decide whether you are interested in church history, views over the Valle d’Itria or a route through the landscape.
Churches and Religious Traditions
The Chiesa San Michele in Frangesto is located at Contrada Impalata 309c, in the hamlet of Loggia di Pilato, along the old scenic road from Monopoli to Selva di Fasano. Its location can therefore be identified by its contrada, hamlet and connection to the road. According to tradition, the church belonged to a convent for women built around the middle of the 12th century. The approximate date refers to the construction of the convent.
The Chiesa di S. Maria Addolorata is dedicated to Maria SS. Addolorata and is the chapel of Impalata. For San Michele, the focus is on its traditional association with the convent; for S. Maria Addolorata, it is the dedication. These offer different points of reference for exploring the churches: a medieval convent tradition on the one hand, and the chapel’s religious dedication on the other.
The Festa di Maria SS. Addolorata in Contrada Impalata is also part of the area’s religious tradition. It is one of Monopoli’s traditional contrada festivals and offers residents and visitors an opportunity to meet. For the 2026 edition, the municipal calendar listed July 18 and 19. These dates refer specifically to the 2026 festival.
Loggia di Pilato and Views over the Valle d’Itria
Loggia di Pilato is the name of a hill in Contrada Impalata, on the road to Fasano. From there, you can look down over the trulli and olive trees of the Valle d’Itria. This makes the Loggia a specific landscape landmark if you are interested in this combination of characteristic buildings and olive groves. The same name also appears as the name of the hamlet in the location of the Chiesa San Michele in Frangesto.
A beginner paragliding course can also start at Loggia di Pilato. Check whether the course is currently available before booking. This lets you consider the views and the possible paragliding activity as two distinct aspects of the place, without confusing them with the description of the circular trail.
The Impalata Trail
The Impalata Trail is a circular route that starts at the church of San Michele. It runs along the Loggia di Pilato promontory, then climbs to a higher section with karst caves. Monumental olive and carob trees characterize the landscape along the trail. The circular route connects the start at the church of San Michele with the stretch along the promontory and the later climb to a higher section with karst caves.
These features help you get your bearings on the route: it starts at San Michele, runs along Loggia di Pilato and then climbs towards the karst caves. The trees describe the landscape along the trail, while the hill and the later climb indicate its elevation profile. Terrain conditions may vary; take this into account when planning your outing.
