Losciale reveals itself through its historic masserie and a landscape where agriculture, architecture and water come together. The nearby stretches of coast also offer contrasting scenery: from dunes and long sandy beaches to coves amid a limestone landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Losciale, these themes offer practical guidance for planning your trip.

Masserie: Battlements, Towers and Chapels

Masseria Losciale is a complex estate that today appears partly as a masseria and partly as a country villa. A substantial perimeter wall, two simple yet richly decorated portals, and a battlement walkway define its appearance. Within the walls are an oil mill carved into the rock and a citrus grove. There is also an intact system of small channels that collects rainwater in cisterns. The estate thus combines architectural features with traces of agricultural use.

Since the 17th century, the lands of the masseria belonged to the Martinelli family, a patrician family originally from Salerno that was based in Monopoli. The activities of Masseria Losciale in the Contrada of the same name focused on olive growing and livestock farming. This historic use is a distinct aspect of the estate, alongside its later appearance as a masseria and country villa.

Masseria Pittore is also located in the Località Losciale. It dates from the 18th century and is considered well preserved. What began as a compact, rectangular tower house developed into a complex of several white-plastered buildings. The masseria includes a rural chapel with a small bell gable. At Masseria Garrappa, other details take centre stage: its original stone-built tower structure may date from the late 16th century; today, it is partly enclosed by a dry-stone wall. The chapel has a 17th-century portal whose architrave features a dentil frame and a frieze decorated with rosettes. Beside the chapel are a citrus grove, a pergola and surviving stone water channels.

Landscape and Archaeological Interpretations

Lama Capitolo is a short, natural watercourse that has deeply cut into the coastal plateau. From a height of around 30 metres, it descends to almost sea level into a broad plain below. The landscape therefore offers a different perspective from the masserie: here, the shape of the terrain defines the impression, while there, walls, towers and water systems tell of how individual farmsteads were used.

Ceramic finds from the Metal Age and the Late Roman period at Masseria Il Capitolo suggest that it may have served as a stopping point on the coastal road during the imperial period. The interpretation of the isolated Grotta del Capitolo also remains open: its location suggests possible use as a hermitage or for an unspecified cultural purpose. These two sites therefore invite cautious historical interpretations; they do not provide a conclusive account of their former functions.

Comparing Nearby Stretches of Coast

The nearby beaches differ in their landscapes and the activities mentioned. At the public Duna beach, high coastal dunes and a long stretch of sand define the scenery; the beach is often used for surfing and other water sports. Nearby Capitolo also has long sandy beaches suitable for coastal walks and water sports. At the public Torre Cintola beach, sandy coves in a high limestone landscape lie beside a 16th-century coastal watchtower.

When weighing up the different coastal scenery, Duna and Capitolo stand out for their long sandy stretches, while Torre Cintola is defined by its coves, limestone and historic watchtower. The information about these beaches refers to the nearby coast; the masserie themselves tell a story of a different, rural side of the area.
