Minervino Murge: Karst Cave, Castello and Bosco di Acquatetta
Accommodation in Minervino Murge
Minervino Murge combines the ancient place of worship Grotta-Chiesa di San Michele and medieval history with the Bosco di Acquatetta woodland. The town offers panoramic views of the Valle dell’Ofanto, Parco Nazionale dell’Alta Murgia and nearby Basilicata. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can plan around cultural and historical sites, panoramic views or trails in the woods.
Culture and History
Grotta-Chiesa di San Michele is an ancient place of worship in a natural karst cave. Ninety steep steps lead down into the cave to the altar of Saint Michael and a tombstone that bears witness to the worship practiced there. If you are planning a visit to the cave, take the flight of stairs into account when making your plans.
Castello di Minervino was founded as a fortress in the 11th century. It forms the original core of the medieval quarter known as “Il Balcone delle Puglie.” The fortress’s founding and its role at the heart of the quarter provide two interconnected points of reference in the town’s history.
The collection at Museo Archeologico Minervino includes amphorae, vessels, various everyday objects and weapons dating from the 1st millennium BC to the first centuries of the Roman Empire. When the museum reopened on 19 May 2002, the archaeological exhibition “Quando l’Ofanto era color dell’ambra” was presented. The collection and the exhibition refer to different time spans: the collection covers a longer historical period, while the exhibition’s presentation is tied to a specific date.
Woodland and Circular Trail
Bosco di Acquatetta lies south of Minervino Murge, covers 1,100 hectares and is the second-largest forest in Apulia by area. Wild orchids and aromatic plants such as thyme, peppermint and wild fennel grow along its trails. Edible plants used in traditional cuisine can also be found there. The woodland can thus be described both in terms of its size and the plants found along its trails.
The “I sentieri dell’Alta Murgia” circular trail takes hikers to the bauxite quarries in the Murgetta Rossa area and back to the entrance of Bosco di Acquatetta. The size figure describes the woodland as a landscape area, while the circular trail identifies a specific destination and return point. If you are including hikes in your plans, you can consider these two aspects separately.
