Turi combines a historic old town with religious buildings from different periods and a long-standing August celebration. These themes can help guide you when choosing Turi as a destination and looking for a hotel for your stay: Are you mainly interested in architectural history or the dates of the Festa patronale?

Old Town and Historic Buildings

The historic old town lies in the highest part of the town. Whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled lanes and votive chapels shape its appearance. Rising above the rooftops is the Torre dell’Orologio, which has been part of the townscape since 1892. The Chiesetta di San Rocco, also called the Chiesetta dell’Annunziata, is one of the few surviving buildings from medieval Turi. Together, these places reveal different facets of the town’s architectural history, without any single style defining its appearance.

Different phases of construction can also be distinguished at the Chiesa Matrice. The building has three broad naves; extensive alterations in the 18th century gave it its present Baroque appearance. The Chiesa Matrice also houses works by the Renaissance sculptor Stefano da Putignano. Comparing its layout, later alterations and artworks offers several historical perspectives on the same church.

Sant’Oronzo alla Grotta dates from the first half of the 18th century. A monumental staircase leads from the church to the cave below. Inside are an altar and a floor made of majolica tiles. The sequence of church, staircase and cave distinguishes this site from the other religious buildings mentioned here.

San Giovanni Battista represents another period: the church and monastery were built in the second half of the 16th century, just outside the town walls. The church houses statues and paintings dating from the 16th to the 18th century. At the Palazzo Marchesale, meanwhile, traces on the ground floor point to the Norman period of the 11th century. The surviving architectural and artistic features thus span everything from medieval elements to later furnishings.

Festa patronale and Event Dates

The Festa patronale di Sant’Oronzo takes place from 24 to 28 August. According to the festive tradition, a procession carrying the saint’s bust takes place on 25 August, travelling from the Chiesa Madre to the outlying church of Sant’Oronzo alla Grotta. If you plan to travel for this event, it is advisable to check that year’s programme.

Another festival highlight takes place on the evening of 26 August: the Carro Trionfale di Sant’Oronzo is pulled through Turi’s illuminated streets by six mules. The current, third version of the Carro was inaugurated in 1971. This makes it possible to distinguish between an annual festival tradition and the history of the cart used in it.

The Sagra della Ciliegia Ferrovia di Turi takes place at a different time of year. Its 34th edition was held from 5 to 7 June 2026. The three-day fair was also organised as a cultural and tourism event. By contrast, the Festa patronale takes place in August; if you plan your trip around either event, take its respective programme and dates into account.

Local Specialities and Landscape

Turi is considered the place of origin of Trònere di Turi. Another local speciality is panzerotti with the traditional “truène”: a beef roll filled with cheese, capocollo, tomato, parsley and chilli. It is cooked with onions over a wood fire and can be used as a filling for panzerotti. The two names refer to different culinary highlights of the area.

The landscape can also be described briefly: Turi lies on karstic, limestone-rich terrain. Together with its old town, religious buildings and August traditions, it makes for a destination whose defining themes are architecture, festival culture and local food.
