Specchiolla is a coastal village in Alto Salento, in the municipality of Carovigno, on the Adriatic Sea. The coast shapes the village, with sandy beaches, low, rugged rocky shores and Mediterranean scrub framing the beaches. The Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve is also nearby, just a few kilometres away. This gives you two distinct landscapes to consider when planning your trip: the coastal features of Specchiolla and the protected coastline, with its nature and activity offerings.

Sandy beaches, rocky shores and a marina

Specchiolla’s beaches have fine, light-coloured sand. The village also has low, rugged rocky shores, and the Adriatic Sea can be accessed from both the sandy beaches and these rocky shores. The rocky-shore area of Chiancareddhe is also accessible from Specchiolla. The coast can therefore be distinguished not only by sand and rock: among the beaches, equipped beach clubs alternate with free beach sections. A small marina is also part of the coastal landscape.

When finding your way around the coast, these differences matter: the type of shoreline and the form of each beach section. If you prefer a particular kind of coastal landscape when planning your trip, you’ll find both sandy beaches and low, rugged rocky areas in Specchiolla. These coastal features offer different ways to reach the sea.

The Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve

The Torre Guaceto State Nature Reserve lies a few kilometres from Specchiolla, on the Adriatic coast of Alto Salento, in the municipality of Carovigno. It covers 1,116 hectares and has an eight-kilometre coastline. These figures describe the protected area as a whole; a particular trail within it, by contrast, leads to a specific beach.

Guided land tours in the reserve include the wetland, Mediterranean scrub and the dune belt. Guided activities also include trekking, cycling and seawatching. These activities can be booked online. Check availability and seasonal offerings when planning your visit.

A combined cycling and walking trail passes through Mediterranean scrub to Punta Penna Grossa beach. The easy route is 1.4 kilometres long and takes about 20 minutes on foot. The destination here is specific, whereas the guided activities offer different ways to explore. This makes it easy to distinguish a particular trail to the beach from the other tours available in the reserve.

Culture, evenings and dining

A small museum is housed in the Torre Guaceto tower. Torre Morgicchio is another local landmark, situated between Torre Santa Sabina and the village of Specchiolla. These places add two distinct points of interest to the coastal and nature offerings: a museum in the reserve’s tower and another tower between the locations mentioned.

The P-Beach Club is located in Specchiolla. Every Sunday at sunset, it hosts a DJ set on the beach that is open to everyone. As event dates should be checked seasonally, it’s a good idea to check the latest date before visiting. Specchiolla also has restaurants serving fish. Alongside the beach and nature, the village’s offerings therefore include an open-to-all evening event and fish dishes.

You can tailor your plans to the village’s features and the activities available nearby.
