Bovino: Culture, Museums and Pilgrimage Traditions
Accommodation in Bovino
For a stay focused on culture and history, Bovino offers several points of interest: the cathedral and the Castello, museums with diverse collections, and religious traditions at the Santuario di Santa Maria di Valleverde. The historic centre stretches across the neighbouring hills of San Procopio and San Martino. Its features include elaborately designed stone portals that are sculptural masterpieces.
The Cathedral and Its Construction History
In the historic centre stands the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, which has held the status of a minor basilica since 1970. It was probably built towards the end of the 8th century using Roman spolia. The first records of work on the cathedral date from 1092 to 1099; Bishop Ugone commissioned this work. The Cappellone di San Marco, dating from 1197, is incorporated into the main building. The dates refer to different stages: 1092 to 1099 refers to the first records of work on the cathedral, while 1197 refers to the Cappellone.
The history of the Castello di Bovino also reaches back to the Middle Ages. At the end of the 11th century, the Norman leader Drogone destroyed an older structure and built the original core of the Castello around a round tower on its ruins. Thus, the histories of the cathedral and castle refer to different developments and dates: the church’s early construction and later work on it, on the one hand, and the creation of the castle’s original core, on the other.
Museums and Their Collections
The Museo Diocesano is located in the rooms of the Palazzo Ducale. It preserves paintings, sacred objects and liturgical vestments from the cathedral and other churches in Bovino. Its collection thus brings together works of art and church objects from several places of worship in the town.
The Museo Civico Carlo Gaetano Nicastro presents forms of human settlement in the Daunian Sub-Apennines from prehistoric times to the 19th century. Its chronological scope therefore ranges from early settlement patterns to a comparatively recent period. If you are interested in the development of human settlement, you will find a different perspective here than in the ecclesiastical collections.
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina is located in the former Capuchin monastery and houses more than 500 objects relating to rural life. Its themes range from agriculture and livestock farming to crafts, domestic life and religion. The Museo delle Armi houses the Procaccini arms collection, considered one of the first three private collections in Europe. It includes types of weapons from the 17th century to the present day.
Pilgrimage and Religious Traditions
The Santuario di Santa Maria di Valleverde preserves a medieval wooden image of the Virgin Mary, which was extensively restored in 1965. Every year on the first Sunday in May, the sanctuary is the destination of a penitential pilgrimage for the faithful from Bovino and neighbouring towns. Another date in the annual calendar is 29 August: on that day, the image of the Virgin Mary is carried in a procession through the streets of Bovino, with participants wearing historical costumes. The two dates mark different forms of tradition—the penitential pilgrimage in May and the procession in August.
