Giardinetto Vecchio: Archaeology and the History of the Borgo
Accommodation in Giardinetto Vecchio
Giardinetto Vecchio brings together archaeological remains, the history of Borgo Giardinetto, and an agricultural landscape along the Torrente Cervaro. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these topics: the archaeological phases are documented for Giardinetto Vecchio; other finds come from LocalitĂ Giardinetto near Orsara di Puglia. The history of the borgo and the landscape also offer their own ways to explore the area. This allows you to decide whether you would like to focus mainly on archaeology, architectural history, or the surrounding area.
Landscape along the Torrente Cervaro
The Giardinetto Vecchio area lies on a gently rolling plain at the mouth of the Torrente Cervaro valley, at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level. The elevation is approximate. Around 70 percent of the local plain is used for agriculture, with cereal and forage crops grown there. The plain, its connection to the valley, and its agricultural land give the landscape its distinctive character and offer a different focus from the archaeological and architectural remains.
Archaeological periods
Giardinetto Vecchio is designated as an archaeological village in Orsara di Puglia. An Archaic phase from the 7th–6th centuries BC and a Classical phase from the 5th–4th centuries BC have been identified for the site. These two periods offer different chronological perspectives on the history of the place.
Further archaeological points of reference are located in LocalitĂ Giardinetto near Orsara di Puglia. Evidence of activity dating to the Middle Neolithic was found there on the left bank of the Torrente Cervaro. Early layers containing Palma Campania-type pottery have also been documented elsewhere in the LocalitĂ Giardinetto area. These finds add distinct sites and chronological contexts to the archaeological picture.
Borgo Giardinetto and its architectural history
Borgo Giardinetto was planned in 1939 as a small rural village during the land reclamation works in the Capitanata, based on a design by architect Marino Lopopolo. The buildings in the borgo are arranged around a central square. The porticoes connect the school building to the church; their proportions and geometry strongly evoke Roman aqueducts.
The former ONC rural village “Case del Fascio” in Località Giardinetto is listed as architectural heritage under Art. 12 of Legislative Decree 42/2004. The assessment was carried out upon request on March 27, 2018. During the Second World War, the borgo served as a storage site selected by American troops. Planning, layout, architecture, and wartime history thus represent different facets of the borgo’s history.
Orsara di Puglia: Food and Excursions
Traditional foods of Orsara di Puglia include bread, wine, extra virgin olive oil, asparagus, honey, and Cacioricotta. Orsara is also home to an active straw-fired oven described as the oldest in Apulia; bread has been baked there since 1526. These regional specialties add a culinary connection to Orsara to the archaeological and architectural perspective on Giardinetto Vecchio.
The “Orsara di Puglia – Cervaro Stream loop” cycling route begins in Giardinetto Vecchio. Since route details can change, check them before setting out. In the Orsara di Puglia area, Bosco Acquara offers a biodiverse woodland with a gently graded linear path for excursions and days outdoors. Trip planning can therefore include different activities: the named starting point of a cycling loop in Giardinetto Vecchio and a woodland with a path in the Orsara area.
