Serracapriola brings together early historical traces, ecclesiastical architecture and local festival traditions. The earliest records of the castle date back to 1045; churches tell of different building phases, while festivals featuring bonfires, pastries and processions offer further insights. Its hilltop setting, with panoramic views across the Tavoliere, also shapes the townscape. For your travel planning, both historical dates and—if you would like to include a festival—the specific event dates are therefore worth considering.

The Castle and the History of the Town

The earliest documentary records of the Castello di Serracapriola date back to 1045. The castle is therefore an early historical landmark for Serracapriola. For the churches, their founding and their present-day architectural form sometimes date to different centuries. The individual dates do not all represent the same stage in a building’s history: each marks a distinct point in the history of the town and its sacred architecture.

Churches, Art and Different Building Phases

Santa Maria in Silvis is considered Serracapriola’s oldest church. It houses an image of the Madonna dating from 1534, depicting Santa Maria in Silvis. The church’s long history and a dated image whose subject is the church itself thus come together here. The church of San Mercurio marks a different turning point: it was rebuilt in 1630 after being destroyed by an earthquake.

At Sant’Angelo, the foundation of the church and monastery and the construction of the present-day church took place at different times. The church and monastery were founded outside the city walls in 1436. The Gonzaga built the present-day church in the early years of the 16th century; it was part of the monastery of the Observant Franciscans. Its nave is single-aisled. Behind the main altar is a wooden choir with an elevated organ made of openwork, gilded wood. The monastery complex also includes three buildings belonging to the former confraternity and a central cloister with an inner courtyard garden. Here, you can distinguish the individual features of the church interior from the elements of the larger monastic complex.

Santa Maria delle Grazie also has several historical points of reference. The church and monastery were founded in 1536. The present-day form of the church took shape through a rebuilding between the late 17th and early 18th centuries; it was consecrated on 13 June 1703. The year of foundation, rebuilding and consecration thus mark different stages: the consecration took place during the period in which the church acquired its present-day form.

Festival Traditions and Local Specialties

The celebrations for San Giuseppe are associated with bonfires and zeppole. This old tradition includes sampling local Zeppellille de Sæn Gesæppe, described as savory and sweet doughnuts. The Festa di San Fortunato Martire is also part of the festival calendar: it takes place annually around the transition from May to June. An overview of the 2026 edition lists a procession through Serracapriola’s historic center with the saint’s silver urn. The two festivals have different emphases: for San Giuseppe, fire and pastries are part of the tradition, while the procession is a defining feature of San Fortunato. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific date and program in advance.

Hilltop Setting and Travel Planning

Serracapriola’s hilltop setting offers panoramic views across the Tavoliere. This landscape adds another perspective to the town’s historical themes: while its buildings span several centuries, here the view takes in the wide plain. When planning your trip, you can consider whether the main draw for you is the history of the buildings, local festival traditions or the landscape. If you are staying for a particular festival, the specific event dates are another point to consider.
