Alezio: Messapian History and a Historic Oil Mill
Accommodation in Alezio
Alezio brings together Messapian remains, religious buildings and rural food culture. For a culture-focused trip, these themes are clearly distinct: the museum and archaeological park represent the Messapian past, while the churches showcase architectural and construction history. Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca combines a historic oil mill with a cooking school. If you are looking for a hotel in Alezio, this outline offers specific pointers to help you decide on the focus of your stay.
Messapian history: museum and burial sites
The Museo Civico Messapico di Alezio was founded in 1982 following archaeological excavations in the Messapian necropolis. It displays epigraphic records as well as gold jewellery from the 1st century BC. The museum is housed in Palazzo Tafuri, an approximately octagonal 18th-century palace. In the same building, ancient written records and gold jewellery meet the palace’s distinctive architectural form.
The Parco Archeologico Messapico has a different focus: it includes 18 Messapian tombs, laid out individually or in small groups. The monumental tomb there is made up of 20 slabs of local tuff. The two numbers refer to different units: 18 to the tombs, and 20 to the slabs of a tomb. This makes it possible to distinguish the number of burials from the construction of the monumental tomb.
Religious buildings from different periods
The Santuario di Santa Maria della Lizza in Alezio is dedicated to the patron saint Santa Maria della Lizza and was built between the 12th and 13th centuries. Its underground cemetery contains ten cells. It was uncovered after the floor collapsed in the 1960s.
The Chiesa della Madonna Addolorata adds another perspective, with a Greek-cross floor plan. It stands on the foundations of a 12th-century building. When comparing dates, it is important to note that the construction period given for the Santuario refers to its construction, while the 12th century for the Chiesa refers to the building beneath its foundations.
Historic oil mill and cooking school
Masseria Didattica Trappito Stracca consists of a 17th-century building above a 14th-century underground oil mill. It is open to schools and rural tourism. Its cooking school teaches visitors how to make wheat bread, pucce, frise, orecchiette and minchiareddri using grain milled on site and a wood-fired oven. Alongside the different construction phases, the focus is also on specific preparation methods and dishes.
