Baia di Gallipoli: Sandy Coast, Dunes and Nature
Accommodation in Baia di Gallipoli
Baia di Gallipoli is a coastal area with a predominantly sandy character, but varied landscapes. Broad dune ridges, a stream bed that is dry at times, and the differently shaped coastlines of Punta della Suina and neighboring Punta Pizzo each add their own distinctive features. If you are looking for hotels for a stay in Baia di Gallipoli, this distinction can help you understand the destination in terms of the coastal and natural features that interest you.
Sandy Coast and Canale Samari
The coastal area is predominantly sandy. In the south, the dune ridges are broad and continuous; towards Lido San Giovanni, they become narrower. The dune landscape is therefore not equally pronounced everywhere. A large part of the coastal area also lies within a park area that contains habitats of considerable conservation interest.
The Canale Samari flows into the sea in the central section. Its banks are reinforced, and its mouth has been engineered. At the same time, the Canale is a Mediterranean flowing-water habitat with intermittently interrupted water flow; its bed may be dry for part of the year. Thus, within the same coastal area, sandy stretches and dunes lie alongside a technically modified watercourse that can be dry at times.
Punta della Suina: Coves, Dunes and Vegetation
Punta della Suina consists of two small sandy coves opposite the island known as Scoglio tondo. The sector features extensive dune ridges and a beach-dune-macchia or garrigue system. This includes coastal pine trees and areas behind the dunes. Due to its natural and ecological characteristics, Punta della Suina was included in the Regional Nature Park. The coastal landscape here therefore combines small sandy coves with dunes and vegetation.
Punta Pizzo and Lido Pizzo
Neighboring Punta Pizzo has a different character: its coast is predominantly rocky, with small sandy areas; behind it are dense pine forest and Mediterranean macchia. A path through the pine forest leads to the long, sandy, equipped beach of Lido Pizzo. Lido Pizzo lies outside the Baia di Gallipoli coastal area. The surrounding area includes managed beach sections as well as free, more natural areas. There are no bars or rental services in these free areas.
The small sandy coves of Punta della Suina therefore differ from the longer beach described at Lido Pizzo; Punta Pizzo itself is characterized above all by its rocky coast, pine forest and macchia. So when comparing the coastal stretches, it is not only the sandy areas but also the dunes and vegetation that shape each landscape.
Isola di Sant’Andrea and Coastal Boat Trips
Isola di Sant’Andrea is a protected area and a refuge for seabirds. A lighthouse stands on the island and is one of the landmarks of the Gallipoli landscape. The island is separate from the Baia di Gallipoli coastal area and can be reached or viewed from the sea on a coastal boat trip. Landing is not permitted; boats must remain more than 100 meters from the shore. As the authorities may update these requirements, check them before setting out on a trip.
Tour A – Costa Sud is a three-hour boat trip to Punta Pizzo and Isola di Sant’Andrea. It thus connects two different coastal destinations. The restrictions for Isola di Sant’Andrea remain in force: the island is not a landing destination, and the required distance from shore must be maintained.
A Historical Landmark near Punta Pizzo
Near Punta Pizzo stands the 16th-century Torre del Pizzo, formerly called “di cutreri.” Its base is shaped like a truncated cone, while the upper section is cylindrical. An external staircase leads to an entrance on the first floor. This description of its form and access adds a historical landmark to the natural landscape, without making any claims about current opportunities to visit it.
The boat trip to the island also has its own protection and distance requirements. Consider which character of the destination suits your stay, then look for hotels in Baia di Gallipoli.
