Galatina between Baroque and Local Tradition
Accommodation in Galatina
Galatina brings together historic architecture, religious traditions and local culture. If you are planning a stay focused on architecture and culture, the basalt-paved centre, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, and the Cappella di San Paolo offer different cultural points of interest. The town also has a library, a museum, a festival and a local pastry speciality.
Baroque Centre and Churches
Galatina’s historic centre is characterised by basalt-paved streets leading to squares, courtyards and palaces. Traces of Baroque art and culture are also visible throughout the town. At the heart of the historic Baroque district stands the Church of Saints Peter and Paul; the original basalt paving is part of this district. The church is a late Baroque building made of Lecce stone. Its façade is designed in the Rococo style, and the interior features frescoes. Its sacred furnishings include polychrome marble altars, among them the Cappellone del Sacramento, dating from the second half of the 17th century. To understand the church, it helps to distinguish between the exterior and interior: Lecce stone and the Rococo façade describe the building, while the frescoes and altars are part of its sacred furnishings.
The ancient Cappella di San Paolo is located near the church. At the chapel, people who had been healed gave thanks to Saint Paul. According to legend, its well is associated with the healing of women bitten by a tarantula. The chapel is thus linked both to a religious practice of giving thanks and to an explicitly legendary tale about the well.
Library and Museum
The Biblioteca Pietro Siciliani preserves around 60,000 documentary and multimedia items. Its Sala Rari houses the historic collection and manuscript holdings. The approximate total gives an idea of the library’s size, while the Sala Rari focuses attention on the more specific historic collection and manuscripts. The museum reopened to the public in the 2000s on the first floor of the Palazzo della Cultura “Zeffirino Rizzelli,” a former Dominican monastery.
Festival Dates and Local Tradition
The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is celebrated from 28 to 30 June. It includes illuminations, tasting stalls, markets, performances featuring folk music and dancing, and fireworks. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates before making your plans.
Pasticciotto also offers a way to experience local culture beyond the town’s buildings. According to legend and local tradition, this pastry was created in Galatina in 1745 at the Ascalone family’s pastry shop, during the celebrations for San Paolo. Its origin story links a local speciality to a specific place, year and festive occasion.
Architecture from Different Periods
The Teatro Cavallino Bianco is an example of 20th-century architecture in the centre of Galatina. Compared with the late Baroque Church of Saints Peter and Paul, it broadens the perspective on the town’s architecture by adding a different period. You can therefore consider the two buildings in terms of their distinct architectural periods, without assigning them to the same era.
