Lequile lies in the Valle della Cupa, in the heart of Salento. The destination’s cultural and historical attractions include churches, historic buildings, a menhir and traditional festivals. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Lequile, your interests can help guide your planning: perhaps you are particularly interested in religious architecture, historic details or the connection between the landscape and local traditions.

Churches and religious traditions

The Chiesa di San Vito Martire preserves a relic and a wooden statue of San Vito. The saint is considered Lequile’s patron saint and is held in great reverence by the local population. The Guglia di San Vito also bears his name: the monument was built in 1694 from Lecce stone by local sculptor Oronzo Rossi and is crowned by a statue of San Vito. The Guglia stands in a public square in Lequile. The relic, statue and monument show different ways in which devotion to the patron saint is expressed.

The Chiesa di San Nicola, also called the Chiesa del Redentore, is a 17th-century Baroque church. Its dome, covered in multicoloured majolica tiles, is particularly striking. The church is used for special liturgical occasions, cultural events and guided tours. If you would like to visit, check access arrangements locally in advance.

The Chiesa di Santa Maria di Loreto has a different architectural character: built in 1597, it has a portal with Corinthian columns and a coat of arms bearing a rampant lion. The dome tiles, columned portal and coat of arms offer concrete details that make it possible to distinguish the designs of the different churches.

Menhir, monastery and historic palaces

The Menhir Aia della Corte is a 2.85-metre-high monolith made of Lecce stone. Discovered in 1922, it bears engravings and crosses on its surface. The surrounding area is agricultural and retains features of Salento’s traditional rural landscape. This makes it possible to consider the archaeological monument in connection with the rural character of its surroundings.

The Chiesa di San Basilio Magno is one of Lequile’s oldest religious buildings. It is associated with the town’s medieval history and the Basilian monastic tradition in Salento. Another religious complex is the Convento di San Francesco: built between 1613 and 1619, it is a Franciscan complex comprising a church and its adjoining monastic rooms.

The Palazzo dei principi Saluzzo, now called Palazzo De Palma, was built in the second half of the 17th century, probably to designs by Mauro and Emanuele Manieri. Its interior includes an oratory, a library with valuable incunabula and old prints from Apulia, and a chapel dedicated to San Giorgio. Palazzo Andrioli is housed in a historic building dating from the late 16th century. The palaces therefore offer a different focus from the churches: at Palazzo De Palma, the building’s history is complemented by the interiors described above, while Palazzo Andrioli is notable above all for the date of its building.

Festivals and local traditions

The Festa Patronale in honour of San Vito Martire traditionally takes place on the fourth Sunday in June. It combines solemn religious ceremonies with a secular programme of traditions, music and fireworks. If you would like to plan your trip around this celebration, check the date for the relevant year in advance.

The Festa della Madonna della Stella traditionally includes the Festa te lu Puruccinu in Dragoni, a hamlet of Lequile. Hard-boiled eggs are sampled with fresh cheese and local wine. The focus of this culinary tradition differs from that of the Festa Patronale: the latter includes religious ceremonies and a secular programme of festivities, while the former centres on the tasting.
