Neviano: Churches, Castle and Landscape
Accommodation in Neviano
Neviano can be explored through a range of themes: churches with different histories of construction and furnishings, the 17th-century castle and the landscape of the Serre Salentine. There are also walks through olive groves and a cycle path connecting the settlement of San Nicola di Macugno with the town centre. You can shape your explorations around cultural history, the landscape or both.
Churches and Local History
Neviano’s current parish church is dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel. In 1853, population growth led to plans for a larger church. The municipality took responsibility for the project and received support from the local population. The old parish church in the town centre dates from around the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. It includes three chapels dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, the Rosary and Saint Oronzo. Together, these building histories reflect different stages in the area’s development.
The Church of Santa Maria della Neve also has a long history: records show that it was already in existence in 1719. Its rectangular floor plan comprises three bays covered by star vaults. The church also houses an altarpiece signed by Raffaello Salines and dated 1837. Its layout, vaults and dated artwork offer different points of interest if you would like to explore sacred architecture and its details.
The Church of the Holy Martyrs Cosmas and Damian was built in 1961 following a local initiative. One of its features is a 37-metre-high freestanding bell tower. Neviano’s mother church is also dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel and has altars made of Lecce stone. Each church has its own distinctive feature: the freestanding tower at one, and altars made from a locally characteristic stone at the other.
Neviano Castle is an imposing 17th-century building constructed at the behest of the Orsini del Balzo family. The local community grew around the castle. A walk also offers the chance to discover the Furnieddi. The castle is therefore linked not only to its history as a building, but also to a walk that explores another local theme.
Museums and Routes Through the Landscape
The Museo del Territorio is housed in San Nicola di Macugno Abbey in the Serre Salentine, an area of great biodiversity. Maps and historical photographs in the museum document how Neviano’s landscape has changed. The Ecomuseum of the Serre di Neviano Landscape focuses on the last foothills of the Murge Salentine and offers walks through olive groves and along dry-stone walls. If you would like to explore the landscape on foot, you will find both historical photographs and maps, as well as routes that take in olive groves and dry-stone walls.
On the outskirts of Neviano, the settlement of San Nicola di Macugno preserves remains of a Byzantine settlement. These include a 16th-century two-storey casale, a medieval wall and four underground caves. A cycle path connects the settlement with the town centre and passes through the landscape of the Serre Salentine. On foot, the Ecomuseum’s highlights are olive groves and dry-stone walls; on the cycle path, the route connects the settlement with the town centre and offers views of the surrounding landscape.
Local Cuisine and Events
A 2024 article reports on another edition of the Festa della bombetta in Neviano, following the great success of the previous one. The event centred on the bombetta: a roll of fresh meat with a filling, cooked over hot coals. If an event is important for your travel dates, check in advance whether suitable dates have been announced.
