If you’re looking for a hotel in Otranto, the town offers several clearly distinct highlights. Historic churches and collections sit alongside varied coastal landscapes and a route through the nature park. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether you’re particularly interested in cultural heritage, coastal scenery or a walking route. The places and features below will help you make that choice.

Coast, Laghi Alimini and Trails

Otranto’s northern coastline is almost entirely sandy and flat. To the south, the landscape is defined by striking cliffs and coves. This contrast offers a practical guide if you’d like to include different types of scenery in your travel plans: both stretches of coast belong to Otranto, but each has a distinct character.

The Laghi Alimini can also be distinguished by their water. Alimini Grande has brackish water. Fontanelle, the basin farther south, is formed by an underground freshwater spring. A canal feeds Alimini Grande from Fontanelle. The basins therefore differ both in the water conditions described and in their relationship to each other.

The Itinerario dell’Est in the Parco Naturale Regionale Costa Otranto – Santa Maria di Leuca e Bosco di Tricase runs from Otranto to Punta Palascia and back. It starts at the “Porta a mare,” passes the marina and then follows an unpaved coastal path into the park. Its starting point, trail surface and out-and-back route give you several practical details to help you decide whether to make it a focus of your trip.

Art and History in Otranto

The floor mosaic in Otranto Cathedral extends across the nave, transept and apse. The priest Pantaleone created it between 1163 and 1165. Scholars, tourists and pilgrims visit the cathedral to venerate the holy martyrs and admire the mosaic. This place brings together religious devotion and interest in a significant floor work.

The Basilica di San Pietro lies in Otranto’s historic centre, is an expression of Byzantine art and dates from the 8th century. It therefore predates the cathedral mosaic, which dates from the 12th century. Those interested in the history of art and religious buildings can compare these two different periods while exploring Otranto.

The Torre Matta also shows how different architectural forms can be combined over time: the cylindrical tower from the first construction phase was incorporated into a quadrangular bastion in the 16th century. The round tower and the later bastion form are two clearly distinct elements in the same architectural development.

A notice dated 23 September 2025 places the permanent exhibition “I luoghi della Preistoria e la Grotta dei Cervi” on the top floor of the Castello Aragonese di Otranto. At the MUDO - Museo Diocesano Otranto, the visitor route covers three floors, displaying stone artworks and valuable artefacts. The museum combines a multi-storey visit with a variety of collection pieces.

Fishing and Planning Your Visit

Fishing is also part of the local character, and it is practised intensively in Otranto. Local catches include mackerel, mullet, grouper, gilthead seabream and octopus. This variety adds a specific local activity to the picture of this coastal town.

A notice relating to 2026 stated that the Chiesa di San Pietro would reopen to visitors from 1 March to 31 December, with admission listed at 3.00 euros per person. If visiting is important to your travel plans, check the current information in advance.
