Presicce: Courtyard Houses, Palazzo Ducale and Focareddha
Accommodation in Presicce
Presicce offers a clear focus on architectural and cultural history when planning a trip. Highlights include the Hanging Garden at Palazzo Ducale, a museum with reconstructed domestic activities, churches and traditional courtyard houses. Olive growing and the annual Focareddha celebration also shape the town’s history. When choosing a hotel, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore architecture and historical connections or combine your trip with the festival date.
Hanging Garden and Palazzo Ducale
In the oldest settlement area, the Hanging Garden is located on the terrace of the south wing of Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Paternò dukes. The palace was originally a Norman fortress built by the De Specula family in the 10th century. The garden is designed in the style of an Italian garden and divided into two areas. The southern area is about 30 centimetres higher than the northern one; ramps and steps connect the two levels.
The Museo della CiviltĂ Contadina is also located in Palazzo Ducale. Several rooms on the upper floor recreate domestic activities from the past, including a large, still-functioning loom. This brings two distinct historical perspectives together in one building: the architectural history of the palace and reconstructed glimpses of domestic activities.
Churches and their architectural history
The Chiesa Madre di Sant’Andrea Apostolo was rebuilt between 1778 and 1781 after the devastating earthquake of 1743. It is designed in an elegant Baroque style and has a Renaissance bell tower dating from the 16th century. Three aspects should therefore be distinguished when considering the church: its reconstruction after the earthquake, its Baroque style and the Renaissance classification of its bell tower.
The history of other churches also forms part of the town’s cultural character. The church of San Giovanni Battista, also known as Carmine, is closely associated with the Carmelite friars, who were based there until the order was suppressed in 1809. The Chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angeli and its monastery are among the most important religious complexes in Presicce-Acquarica.
Courtyard houses and lanes
The Case a corte in Presicce consist of an uncovered central space surrounded by several residential units. The units share one or more entrances from the street. This layout can be recognised by its spatial arrangement: the open courtyard is in the centre, the homes are grouped around it, and they share access to the street.
The Rione Corciuli is a particularly long courtyard. It has two entrances, via the Rioni Soronzi and Padreterno, as well as a very narrow lane. Its description thus combines the courtyard’s specific length with its named entrances and the narrow lane—details that go beyond the general form of the Case a corte.
Focareddha: an event at the end of November
The Focareddha di Sant’Andrea is a recurring patron-saint bonfire festival. The large fire is lit every year on 29 November, the eve of the patron saint’s feast day; the fuel is wood collected from the fields. The annual festival in Presicce lasts from 29 to 30 November. The programme includes a small tasting, food stalls, local crafts and live music in the lanes of the historic centre.
Roasted fish, known as “triglie di Sant’Andrea”, is considered a typical festival dish. Individual programme items may change. If you are travelling specifically for the Focareddha, check the specific programme and dates of the festivities before your trip.
Olive growing as part of the town’s history
Presicce’s history is linked to traditional olive growing and the processing of olives into oil. This agricultural connection adds another perspective on the town to the themes of palaces, churches and courtyard houses. Your trip can therefore focus on different subjects: architecture and religious history, the design of the courtyard houses, or the tradition associated with the festival at the end of November.
