Discover San Donato Di Lecce through its church architecture, sacred art and archaeological remains, as well as its August festival traditions. Its attractions offer different perspectives: the churches reveal their building phases, crypts and art, while the menhirs invite you to consider their form and location. If you are planning your stay around the festivities, the August dates provide a specific timeframe to work with.

Churches, Crypts and Sacred Art

The Chiesa Matrice della Resurrezione del Signore dates back to the Norman period. It was completely rebuilt in the 17th century and completed in 1704. The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata is a monument of Salentine Baroque and probably dates from 1665. During restoration work at the Chiesa La Madonna della Neve in San Donato Di Lecce, frescoes depicting saints of the Greek liturgy from the early 15th century were uncovered.

In Galugnano stands the Chiesa della Madonna della Pietà o M. SS. Addolorata. It was built in the second half of the 17th century over an existing crypt, which is now integrated into the church. A central staircase in the single-nave interior leads to the old Basilian crypt. In the presbytery, a monumental altar dedicated to the Crucifix features Baroque ornamentation, flanked by statues of the Archangel Michael and Saint Dominic. The building thus offers several points of interest: the layout of the nave, the crypt and the presbytery’s furnishings.

Menhirs and Archaeological Traces

The Curti Vecchi menhir is a slightly inclined, square prism three metres high. It stands on an irregular rocky outcrop. The Di Ussano menhir is located on a hill near the ancient settlement of Ussano and stands in its original location. Its corners were later bevelled, probably to highlight its ritual function. By comparison, Curti Vecchi is distinguished by its size and geometric shape, while Di Ussano is notable for its original location and the merely presumed ritual interpretation.

Palazzo and Collections in Galugnano

In 1587, the Spaniard Ramirez Dellanos became lord of the hamlet and had the eponymous baronial Palazzo Dellanos built on another building. The palazzo’s exterior and interior walls bear numerous graffiti. The building is privately owned.

The Pinacoteca al Polo delle Arti in Galugnano displays a selection of works from a collection entrusted to the municipality of San Donato by its heirs, which is now part of the shared public heritage. The Museo della Civiltà Contadina “Terra di Vigliano” in Galugnano is the work of the volunteer association “AMICI DEL PRESEPE”. The two institutions have different focuses: the Pinacoteca displays selected works from a collection, while the volunteer association’s work is an essential part of the museum’s identity.

August Celebrations and Getting There

Celebrations in honour of the patron saint include colourful illuminations, concerts and music, as well as a procession carrying the statue of Saint Donatus through the town’s streets, accompanied by songs and prayers. The patron saint is celebrated on 7, 14 and 28 August. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the dates for your chosen year.
