San Foca: Harbor, Coast and Local History
Accommodation in San Foca
San Foca combines the character of a fishing village with a harbor, a seafront promenade running through the town, and activities on the water.
Fishing Village and Seafront Promenade
Narrow streets, white houses and sea caves characterize San Foca as a fishing village. The wide, busy seafront promenade runs through the town. The narrow streets and broad promenade therefore stand side by side as contrasting features of the townscape. If you would like to get a sense of the town’s character, both are part of the picture.
Marina and Boat Trips
San Foca Marina has a 200-meter-long quay and three floating docks with a total of 150 berths. Water and electricity hookups are also available at the marina. If you are traveling by boat, check berth availability before arriving. The marina has toilets, showers and free Wi-Fi; assistance is also available around the clock on VHF channel 12. Check the available services again before your trip, too.
Boat trips are offered from Porto di San Foca. The trips follow the coast past San Foca, Roca li posti (Grotte della Poesia), Torre dell’Orso and Sant’Andrea. The boat can anchor in coves, where you can swim and view otherwise inaccessible cliffs and sandy coves. Trip availability and safety conditions may change, so check the specific offering when planning your trip.
A Cycling Route Linking Several Places
Municipal cycling route 3 connects Torre dell’Orso, Roca Nuova, San Foca and Torre Specchia; its stated length is 25.4 kilometers. This offers a choice of different ways to explore: boat trips depart from Porto di San Foca and follow the coast, while the cycling route links several named places. The stated distance gives you a specific point of reference if you would like to include this route in your travel plans.
Watchtower, Church and Festival Traditions
Torre di San Foca was built shortly after the mid-16th century as a watchtower for coastal observation. The parish church is dedicated to Maria SS. Assunta and was rebuilt in 1963. A statue of Saint Foca can also be seen in the present-day parish church. The tower and church are distinct historical landmarks: the watchtower, with its coastal function, and the parish church, with a statue of its patron saint.
At the annual Madonna del Mare festival, fishermen carry the statue of the Madonna out to sea in a procession. San Foca’s patron saint festival takes place on August 18 and 19. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the exact event dates for the year in question.
More Ways to Discover San Foca
The “Io Posso” terrace is a beach facility for people with ALS, neuromotor disorders and other disabilities. If you are interested in this facility, check the details before your trip.
The harbor is also a place to find fresh fish. When the fishing boats return from their fishing trips, you can find gilthead seabream, European sea bass and mullet there. Availability depends on fishing activity and the season, so the selection may vary.
