Marina di Lizzano combines wide sandy beaches with dunes and a varied coastal landscape. When planning your hotel stay, it is worth considering whether you mainly want to swim, explore nature, or include culture and history. The coastline stretches for seven kilometres along the Litoranea Salentina.

Swimming and Beach Areas

Along the coast, long stretches of free beaches alternate with equipped beach clubs. Since individual beach clubs operate seasonally, check before your trip whether the services you want are available during your stay. The mostly sandy seabed slopes gently and is suitable for leisurely swimming and bathing.

The coastline has been awarded the Green Flag in recognition of its child-friendly beach features. If specific facilities are important to your plans, check in advance for the current designation and available services. This will help you match your expectations for the beach with the conditions during your travel dates.

Dunes, River and Archaeological Finds

Protected Mediterranean maquis grows in the coastal dunes, including the plant Ginepro coccolone. In some places, the dune system is interrupted by small wetlands and extensive stands of Mediterranean pines and holm oaks. This stretch of coast therefore includes wetlands and woodland as well as sand and dunes.

The Ostone, also known as Canale dei Cupi, is a 13-kilometre-long stream that flows into the sea at Marina di Lizzano. Pottery, gold, worked stones, votive shrines and necropolises dating from the Bronze Age and Magna Graecia period have been discovered along the river, particularly near the sea. A whole Neolithic village has also been found. These discoveries point to several periods in the history of this landscape.

Route, Kitesurfing and Small Boats

Route 12 – Lizzano is 8.6 kilometres long and can be covered on foot or by bicycle; Marina di Lizzano is one of its main attractions. Check current trail conditions locally before setting off. The area is considered suitable for intermediate, advanced and professional kitesurfers. Before kitesurfing, check the current conditions and local rules.

Small boats can use a mooring facility with seasonal pontoon berths. As a guideline, boats should be up to 10 metres long, with a maximum draught of 1.8 metres. Berths are seasonal, so check their current availability. Also check nautical conditions and local regulations with the relevant authorities before setting sail.

Coastal and Local Culture

Numerous rural masserie are located along the coast of Marina di Lizzano. Some are fortified buildings dating from the Middle Ages. Torre Zozzoli is known locally as Torre Sgarrata.

The rocky crypt of the Annunziata is in the municipality of Lizzano, about one kilometre from the historic town centre. It remains an important destination for Marian devotion and pilgrimages. These places and buildings add a cultural dimension to your experience of the coast, alongside its beaches, dunes and nature.
