Maruggio: Churches, Festivals and Protected Coastline
Accommodation in Maruggio
Maruggio offers several starting points for planning a trip: historic churches and architecture in the town centre, festivals with religious and cultural connections, and a protected coastline. When planning a stay, you can choose your travel dates according to whether architecture, a particular festival or the landscape is your main focus.
Churches and Architecture in Maruggio
The historic centre developed around the Chiesa Madre Santissima Natività di Maria Vergine, dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The church was built in the 15th century and altered in later centuries. Its architectural history thus spans several periods; at the same time, it stands at the heart of the development of the historic centre.
Another distinctive building is the Convento dei frati minori osservanti, built between 1534 and 1575. Its cloister is laid out as a four-sided portico. The arcades are supported by massive octagonal columns made of Carparo stone, with cross-vaults above. The description identifies not only when the monastery was built, but also specific architectural elements: the shape and material of the columns, and the vaults, give the courtyard its architectural structure.
The Chiesa di Sant’Eligio e della SS. Annunziata was built in the 16th century in the architectural style typical of the Renaissance. The Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tempio is one of the architectural and artistic traces of Maruggio’s historic past. The account of the Chiesa della Madonna del Verde should be understood as a tradition: according to legend, it was commissioned by the Knights of Malta.
The Castello dei Commendatori also combines architectural details with a contemporary cultural role. It is accessed via Via Umberto I; an arched gateway leads into a courtyard where the Cappella della Madonna della Visitazione once stood. Today, the castle is also a venue for cultural events and performances, including concerts, art exhibitions and historical re-enactments.
Coastal Landscapes and Protected Areas
The Parco delle dune di Campomarino was established as a protected area in 1995 and encompasses the entire coastline of Maruggio. In addition, the Dune di Campomarino are designated as a Site of Community Importance. These protected-area designations give the coastal landscape a distinct significance alongside the town’s churches and historic buildings. When planning a holiday, you can therefore contrast a cultural focus in the centre with a focus on the landscape, without treating them as the same place to visit.
Festivals and Dates
Maruggio’s patronal festival was scheduled for 13 and 14 July in 2025. That year’s celebrations included a procession, illuminations, a marching band and a market with stalls that enlivened the historic centre. The festival days bring together religious tradition, music and market activity in the town centre. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the programme for the relevant year: dates and details may vary in future editions.
The Festa della Madonna dell’Alto Mare is celebrated at Ferragosto. It is associated with a votive chapel on Duna Capoccia-Scorcialupi. There, the Madonna is venerated as the patron saint of sailors and people of the sea. The festival includes a procession at sea from the port of Campomarino to the chapel, where it is welcomed with a fireworks display. Its maritime procession and religious significance make this festival a distinct consideration when planning a trip.
In the second half of August 2025, the Strada dei Saperi e dei Sapori also took place. The event brings together food and crafts with folk music and the preservation of local traditions. It therefore offers a different focus from the patronal festival or the celebrations of the Madonna dell’Alto Mare. The same applies to this event: if the date is important for your trip, check the programme for the relevant edition.
When looking for a hotel in Maruggio, the historic buildings, protected areas and festival dates can offer different points of reference. First consider which of these themes matters most to your stay, and check planned event dates against the current programme before booking.
