Discover Talsano: History and Architecture
Accommodation in Talsano
Talsano combines a relatively recent local history with much older archaeological traces. The Borgo itself emerged in the second half of the 19th century; however, the oldest phases of use of the area now occupied by the settlement date back to Hellenistic times. These different time periods give the local history its distinctive context: alongside the development of the Borgo are traces of earlier use and rural settlements.
Archaeological traces from different periods
Tombs discovered in the town centre have been dated to the Hellenistic period. These should be distinguished from the necropolises in Lucignano and Sanarica: in both places in the Talsano area, relatively extensive burial grounds from the Archaic period, associated with rural settlements, have been investigated. A necropolis is a burial ground. This distinction in dates helps classify the Hellenistic tombs in the centre and the Archaic necropolises in the other two places as distinct archaeological references. Together, they point to a long history of human activity in the area.
Masserie and rural architectural history
A considerable number of masserie were built in the Talsano area during the 17th and 18th centuries to make better use of local resources. These rural farm complexes are therefore an important stage in the region’s architectural history. Masseria Pizzariello lies northeast of Talsano, on the Strada Provinciale 107 towards San Donato. Only plan a visit if access has been confirmed in advance. This makes it clear that an interesting historic building is not necessarily an accessible visitor attraction.
Church and architecture
The Church of Santa Maria di Talsano, located outside the built-up centre, was elevated to parish status in 1793. This date places the church’s history in a period when the area’s rural buildings already played an important role. Villa Francesco Schinaia in the Talsano district of Taranto offers a different architectural accent. Its eclectic style combines elements of rural Apulian architecture—including star vaults and stone floors—with influences from the Liberty and Art Deco styles. This building makes it possible to see the combination of different design styles in specific named architectural features.
Local development and historic connections
According to Arditi, the historic centre developed from the habit of Taranto’s landowners of allowing colonists to live permanently on their fields. This explanation draws attention to how the town centre originated and to the connection between land ownership and settlement at the time. Around 1870, Talsano was connected by roads suitable for wheeled traffic to Faggiano, Leporano and Taranto. These road connections describe the transport links of the time; for your travel plans today, consult current route information.
A possible date to consider when planning
In December 2024, a festival on 13 May featuring a foot pilgrimage was announced for the Santuario Nostra Signora di Fatima in Talsano. If you would like to include this date in your travel plans, check the current programme in advance. This will help you plan your visit to Talsano around the historical and architectural topics that interest you most.
