The Castello di Bernalda is considered the town’s landmark and has towered over the Basento Valley for centuries. Cultural highlights range from historic churches and their furnishings to an art collection featuring works from the 19th and 20th centuries. The coast, nature and archaeology add further, distinct themes to your travel plans.

Historic Buildings and Art

The Chiesa di San Bernardino da Siena was founded by Bernardino de Bernaudo between 1510 and 1532. Its furnishings include a gilded wooden pulpit, an organ dating from the 18th to 19th century, a holy water font from 1607 and a baptismal font from the 16th to 17th century. These dates give an impression of the range of periods represented by the furnishings, though they do not all come from the same era.

At the Chiesa e Convento di Sant’Antonio, it is worth noting the described layout: the longitudinal nave comprises a central nave and a right aisle. The Sant’Antonio monastery was founded in 1615 and expanded over time. The complex, which includes an adjoining church, has a square layout and a central cloister. The Chiesa Madonna del Carmine was built in the 16th century and underwent at least two or three alterations or extensions over time. Together, these buildings illustrate different aspects of sacred architecture: floor plans, spatial organization and changes over time.

Art is also part of the cultural offering: PAMeC, the Pinacoteca Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, founded in 1999, is housed in the Castello di Bernardino. It displays works by Lucanian and other artists from the 19th and 20th centuries. The Castello di Bernalda, as the town’s landmark, and the Castello di Bernardino, as the location of the art gallery, are each referred to here by their own name.

The Chiesa Mater Ecclesiae, also known as the Chiesa dei ss. Medici, preserves the original of a painting of Padre Pio. It is reported that the painting wept blood on 19 August 1994. This remains a reported religious tradition; the specific date is part of its traditional account.

Coast, Nature and Archaeological Heritage

Lido di Metaponto is a seaside resort on the Ionian coast of Basilicata. It is known for its long, golden-sand beaches and the clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Lago Salinella offers a different landscape: it is a small coastal dune lake in the Riserva naturale Stornara nature reserve. The border between Apulia and Basilicata effectively divides the lake. These coastal highlights therefore offer two distinct experiences: a seaside resort and a protected dune lake, each with its own character.

The Parco archeologico dell’area urbana e della Necropoli di Crucinia di Metaponto preserves monumental remains of the city founded by the Achaeans in the second half of the 7th century BC. One restriction is important for planning your visit: according to the Ministry’s current information, the Crucinia necropolis area is not open to visitors. This information refers to the necropolis area.

Planning and Getting There

The Parco Archeologico di Metaponto offers educational activities, guided tours and cultural events that promote the archaeological heritage. If you would like to include a specific tour or event in your plans, check the relevant dates in advance. Metaponto is served by the state railway line between Taranto and Sibari; check the timetable before travelling. This makes it easy to distinguish between the themes when planning your trip: sacred architecture and art, coastal landscapes or archaeological heritage.
