Marconia combines a distinctive piazza layout with a multifaceted local history and a unique film-related offering. For travel planning, these topics can be considered separately: Piazza Elettra and the church represent architectural history; the town’s origins and historical context relate to local development; and CineParco TILT is about cinema and film. This lets you decide which focus matters most for your stay.

Piazza Elettra and the Church of San Giovanni Bosco

Piazza Elettra serves as a meeting point and landmark for the district of Pisticci. At its center stands the Torre littoria, or Lictor Tower; buildings from the Fascist era and the Church of San Giovanni Bosco surround the piazza. In 1940, the piazza was laid out as a Fascist “rural piazza.” Its architecture includes a covered arcade and public buildings such as the town hall, post office and headquarters of the GIL (Gioventù Italiana del Lavoro). The tower, arcades and public buildings give the piazza a clearly recognizable layout.

The construction history of the Church of San Giovanni Bosco can be traced through three dates: construction was approved in 1955, completed in 1958 and the church was consecrated on May 6, 1959. Approval, completion and consecration each mark a distinct stage. Together with the 1940 piazza, these dates form a timeline that runs from the design of the piazza to the completion of the church in the late 1950s.

Origins and historical context

Marconia was established in 1938 as “Villaggio Marconi” in honor of Guglielmo Marconi. Two years later, Piazza Elettra was laid out. This sequence places the town’s origins and the design of its central piazza as two distinct stages in the area’s early development.

The town’s history also includes the role the Fascist regime envisaged for Marconia in its plans for the Bosco Salice internment colony: the town was intended to serve as an operational center. This is a distinct aspect of its historical context, alongside the architectural traces of the Fascist era in the piazza. Those interested in Marconia’s history will find both dated architectural history and a political past that extends beyond the piazza’s architecture.
