Discover Calvello: Churches, Ceramics and Mountain Scenery
Accommodation in Calvello
Calvello brings together historic buildings, a tradition of ceramics and mountain scenery. In the town, Romanesque church portals, works of art and lanes lined with stone houses take centre stage; at Monte Volturino, visitors can also find a sanctuary high in the mountains, sweeping valley views and a designated cycling route. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether to focus primarily on architectural and art history, pottery or the landscape.
Churches, Castle and Art History
The Church of Santa Maria del Piano dates back to the 12th century. Its façade features a remarkable Romanesque portal, with another on the left side aisle. The church also houses a Byzantine-influenced wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, which is likewise believed to date from the 12th century. The Chiesa Madre houses a 17th-century painting of the young John the Baptist, attributed to the Neapolitan school. Santa Maria degli Angeli contains five frescoes dated to 1616 and signed by Girolamo Todisco.
The history of the Castello di Calvello also reaches back beyond the medieval structure: it was built on the remains of an 8th-century Lombard fortress. The Museo Multimediale della Ceramica is located in the castle’s west wing. The town’s various religious and historical connections offer different starting points for exploring Calvello, from Romanesque architecture and painting to the history of the castle’s construction.
Ceramics and Local Themes
Calvello’s ceramic production is characterised by distinctive colours such as green and yellow. The designs draw on motifs inspired by local produce. At the Museo Multimediale della Ceramica, visitors can learn from local Faenzari and shape small vases, plates, jugs and other objects on a potter’s wheel, then decorate them in the traditional Calvello style. This craft is connected not only with the town’s colours and patterns, but also with a hands-on activity.
The Centro Didattico Energia e Territorio offers a different perspective. It hosts a photographic exhibition on oil in Basilicata, covering the period from 1949 to 2009. A local sweet is another of the area’s distinctive features: Pastatella is a ravioli-shaped pastry filled with chopped chestnuts mixed with chocolate or Sanguinaccio, and finished with icing sugar.
Monte Saraceno and Mountain Scenery
The Santuario di Maria Santissima del Monte Saraceno stands on a rocky outcrop at an altitude of 1,320 metres on the slopes of Monte Volturino. The sanctuary is about eight kilometres from Calvello town centre and can be reached by a steep road that climbs the mountainside. From there, the view opens onto the valley stretching from Monte di Viggiano to Caperrino, with dense woods, clearings and the Piesco River. The sanctuary keeps the image of the Madonna del Monte Saraceno in a wooden urn known as a “caggia”.
Monte Volturino offers another vantage point, with panoramic views across the Basento and Agri valleys almost as far as the Ionian Sea. Calvello is located in the Parco Nazionale dell’Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri Lagonegrese and is part of the Monte Volturino ski area. The area’s attractions therefore range from sacred art and festival traditions to the surrounding ridges and valleys.
Cycling Route and Festival Dates
The Calvello–Villa d’Agri section of the Ciclovia Meridiana is 28.1 kilometres long. The cycling route starts in Calvello and runs from the town centre to Monte Volturino, passes through Marsicovetere and ends in Villa d’Agri. Near Monte Volturino, it passes through clearings where horses and Podolian cattle graze; grazing conditions may vary seasonally. The route connects specific places and landscape features along the way.
The Feast of the Madonna del Monte Saraceno takes place on the second Sunday in May and on 8 and 9 September. If you plan your trip around one of these dates, check the specific festival dates before booking. The recurring dates place the festival in both spring and September, while the churches, ceramics and cycling route offer further points of interest for your stay in Calvello.
