Chiaromonte lies within Pollino National Park at an altitude of 794 metres, on a rocky outcrop. The Sinni Valley is to the south, and the valley of the Torrente Serrapotamo, a tributary of the Sinni, is to the north. The historic centre is arranged like an amphitheatre on the rocky outcrop. Its elevation and the surrounding valleys provide a clear geographical context for the town.

Landscape and places to visit

A walk leads from the historic centre to Parco Torre della Spiga. Bosco Magnano and Sorgenti Tuvolo are listed as places to visit on the Chiaromonte page of Pollino National Park. These names add further landscape features within the Pollino area to the picture of the town.

Buildings and historic sites

Castello dei Sanseverino is connected to an adjoining medieval fortification circuit. Collegiata Insigne di San Tommaso Apostolo is one of Chiaromonte’s historically significant monuments. Chiesa madre di San Giovanni Battista dates from the 12th to 13th century. It houses a wooden Madonna and Child seated on a throne, created around 1200.

The ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Santa Maria del Sagittario are also part of the town’s historic character. They lie in the Sinni Valley within Pollino National Park. Other sights in Chiaromonte include the ruins of Convento del Ventrile, Cappella di S. Andrea Avellino, and Villa and Parco Torre Albineta.

Museum and visit planning

The Museo archeoantropologico “Lodovico Nicola di Giura” brings together the study of ancient physical anthropology and the archaeology of the Oenotrians. Its collections and interdisciplinary research focus on reconstructing the historical and anthropological development of the Oenotrian-Italic communities of Chiaromonte and Guardia Perticara. The museum thus connects two distinct fields of research with the history of both communities.

As of August 31, 2026, the museum is open Mondays from 1 pm to 6 pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 am to 2 pm, and Thursdays from 1 pm to 6 pm and Fridays from 9 am to 2 pm. Visits on Saturdays and Sundays are possible by prior reservation. Guided tours on other days and at other times can be arranged by reservation via email at museo.chiaromonte@gmail.com; the minimum group size is ten people. Check the hours again before your visit.

Wine tradition and festival

Numerous caves carved into the rock are used to store artisanally produced red wine made from local vineyards. This wine connection is evident in a specific form of storage associated with local wine production.

A municipal listing dated August 6, 2026, describes the Festival delle Tradizioni e della Musica Popolare as its 20th edition. Parco Torre Spiga and Parco delle Cantine in the municipality of Chiaromonte are associated with the festival. The wine tradition and the festival thus represent two distinct aspects of local character: the use of the caves on the one hand, and the festival’s association with named locations on the other.
