Accommodation in Fraccia
If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Fraccia, specific nature and culture topics can help you plan your trip. Hiking trails starting in Fraccia have different landmarks; other described natural and cultural sites are located in Latronico. This lets you consider the places according to their respective themes, rather than grouping them together as a single route or attraction.
Hiking routes from Fraccia
One hiking route starting in Fraccia passes Sorgente Fontanelle, listed at 1.0 km along the route. Another route passes Monte Alpi; the route listing gives 4.5 km there. On a further hiking route, Belvedere Giardino dei Loricati is at 5.1 km. These distances refer to the respective waypoints, not walking times. As route conditions may change, check the current situation before setting out.
A separate connection is hiking trail SI T04 from Latronico to Castelsaraceno. It heads toward Monte Alpi and reaches the summit of Santa Croce at an elevation of 1,893 m. The waypoints on the routes from Fraccia and the reference to the SI T04 summit offer different points of reference for understanding the hiking options; they do not describe the same trail.
Landscape and nature in Latronico
Monte Alpi is home to Italy’s northernmost population of Loricato pines. It comprises about 1,000 specimens, spread across elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 m. This range describes a population across different elevations. Alongside the hiking trails, a specific botanical feature is therefore also a focus.
The Calanchi of Latronico form a scenic viewpoint on the eastern and northeastern edge of the historic center. Erosion and the runoff of clay soils have created sharply edged ridges there. From this viewpoint, you can see the Pollino Massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci, and large parts of the Sinni Valley. The Calanchi thus combine a distinctive landform with views of several named landscape areas.
The Malboschetto municipal forest of Latronico covers about 700 hectares. A road through the forest leads to a mountain hut at an elevation of around 1,000 m. There are equipped areas there with tables, benches, and fire pits. Facilities may vary depending on the season or maintenance status; confirm their condition before your visit.
Fossils and archaeological remains
Below Monte Alpi, a fish fossil can be seen on a large stone slab in Contrada Iannazzo. It is classified as a specimen of the family Istiophoridae, genus Makaira, and is known among anglers as a marlin. The fossil is 235 cm long and 95 cm high; its rostrum measures 30 cm. It dates from about 30 million years ago. The length, height, and rostrum measurements describe different dimensions of the same find.
The Museo Civico Archeologico in Latronico has two exhibition rooms. Finds from the caves of Calda and the indigenous Enotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci are displayed there. The five caves of Calda contain archaeological finds dating from 8000 to 1300 BC. The museum description thus brings together two distinct archaeological contexts: the caves and the necropolis.
Another work in Latronico’s thermal park is the Earth Cinema. The installation consists of a 45-meter-long cut excavated into the ground, which people can enter from both sides. Its dimensions, form, and access from both sides give it a different character from the exhibition rooms of the archaeological museum.
