Genzano di Lucania: History Between the Old Town and Springs
Accommodation in Genzano Di Lucania
Those interested in historic architecture, sacred art and rural traditions will find various ways to explore the history of Genzano di Lucania. The town is clearly laid out: alongside the newer district at a higher elevation is the historic centre, which stands on a rocky outcrop and is surrounded by ravines on three sides. This division and the town’s striking location provide a sense of direction for a stay focused on the old town, its churches and its distinctive landscape.
Historic Centre and Church Art
In Genzano’s oldest district, on a promontory, stands the Chiesa e Monastero di S. Maria Annunziata complex. This site, too, is surrounded by three deep ravines; from here, there are panoramic views of the ancient Fonte di Capo d’Acqua and Monte Vulture. The Chiesa dell’Annunziata was built in the 16th to 17th centuries. Its portal dates from the first half of the 16th century, and the church is attached to the Poor Clares’ monastery, founded by Aquilina Sancia in 1321.
The Chiesa di Santa Maria della Platea houses a polyptych from the Aragonese period, attributed to the Venetian school. Visitors can also see an 18th-century wooden statue of the Madonna in Byzantine style. The Chiesa del Sacro Cuore houses three paintings from the 18th century, signed D. G., depicting Saints Agatha, Lucy and Apollonia. Two other panels, dating from the 14th to 15th centuries, depict Saint Anthony and Saint Clare. The building is a remodelled, smaller version of the former Franciscan monastery, founded in 1630.
The Chiesa del Carmine is also part of the old town’s history: it is located on the main street and connected to the premises of the former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites. The Chiesa di Maria SS.ma delle Grazie was elevated to the status of a Marian shrine on 7 October 2013. Together, these churches reflect different historical influences and works of art, rather than depicting just one period in the town’s history.
Fountains, Springs and Landscape
The Fontana Cavallina was built entirely in the Neoclassical style between 1865 and 1893. It features a statue of the goddess Ceres, known to residents as “Sand’Abbunnanza”. The statue of Ceres is an archaeological find dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. Thus, two distinctly different periods meet at this fountain: the construction date of the Neoclassical work and the much earlier date of the statue.
At the Fonti di Capo d’Acqua, abundant, clear and very fresh spring water flows from the outlets. A park has been created nearby as a place for relaxation and outdoor recreation. A simple chapel was built there in 1954 near the site where a sacred image was found. The springs add another dimension to the history of the town’s churches and art: water, landscape and religious memory come together here.
Traditional Crafts and Nearby History
The traditional crafts of rural life are part of Genzano di Lucania’s intangible cultural heritage, but are no longer practised. They relate to the entire area, with a particular focus on the historic centre. The town’s historical traditions also included kneading bread and preparing related products in the home. The Museo della tradizione contadina at the agricultural and environmental institute displays objects associated with local rural folklore.
Another historical landmark is Castello di Monteserico, about 15 km from Genzano di Lucania. The nearby castle was built in the Norman period and is considered a classic example of medieval architecture. Its layout includes a central square tower, a lower outer wall and a moat. The area therefore links the town’s history with a distinctive medieval complex.
