Discover Latronico from different perspectives: the town is located in the Pollino National Park, and thermal springs rise in the hamlet of Calda. Archaeological finds, sacred art and distinctive landscape features add to its thermal history. If you are looking for a hotel in Latronico, you can start by considering which of these interests you would like to shape your trip.

Landscape around Monte Alpi and I Calanchi

Monte Alpi is home to Italy’s northernmost stand of loricato pines. It comprises about 1,000 trees, growing at elevations between 1,200 and 1,700 metres above sea level. Malboschetto, Latronico’s municipal forest, covering about 700 hectares, is also part of this natural area.

I Calanchi offer a different kind of landscape. Erosion and the runoff of clay-rich soils have formed sharp-edged, fan-shaped ridges and narrow, steep gullies. From I Calanchi, there are views of the Pollino massif, the Monti di Lauria, Colle dei Greci and a large part of the Sinni Valley. Monte Alpi, with its pine trees, represents a different perspective on nature from the gullies and ridges that characterise the Calanchi.

Caves and archaeological collections

The five caves of Calda contain formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, as well as archaeological material dating from 8000 BC to 1300 BC. Finds from the caves are also kept at the Museo Civico Archeologico. The caves thus bring together geological formations and evidence of early settlement discovered there.

The same archaeological museum also displays finds from the Enotrian necropolis of Colle dei Greci, dating from the 7th and 6th centuries BC. The Parco Archeologico Colle dei Greci appears to have been inhabited by small groups of Enotrian origin between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. These dates refer to different evidence: finds from the caves, the necropolis and the possible settlement of the archaeological park.

Those interested in everyday history will find another focus at the Museo della CiviltĂ  Contadina. Its collection comprises 780 objects relating to traditional crafts, including the work of carpenters, blacksmiths and shoemakers. The cultivation of grapes and grain, the bedroom and transport are also among the topics documented. The collection thus complements the archaeological museums with insights into rural life and traditional work.

Thermal history, art and churches

The Museo del Termalismo is housed in the historic thermal establishment, built in 1928. Its eight sections cover thermal baths and spa traditions, as well as local crafts, traditional foods, rituals and festivals, and emigration. Its subject matter therefore goes beyond thermal traditions and includes other aspects of local life.

The churches also preserve different chapters of the town’s history. The Basilica Pontificia Minore di Sant’Egidio Abate has a three-aisled interior; six columns with Doric capitals divide the aisles. The Chiesa di San Nicola dates from the 12th century. It houses the oil painting Madonna della Pietà by Simone Oliva, created in the 18th century and restored in 1852. The building’s history and the artwork can be distinguished chronologically: the church is medieval, while the painting is considerably more recent.

Plan your stay around your interests

Visitors exploring Monte Alpi by mountain bike can be accompanied by MTB guides from Pro Loco Latronico. If you plan this activity, check possible dates and booking arrangements with the Pro Loco in advance. This keeps your plans focused on the specific activity rather than combining different interests into a single visit.

Next, consider which details about the location and amenities of a particular hotel are important for your trip. This lets you tailor your search to your own stay without treating Latronico’s different attractions as if they were all the same.
