Pignola’s historic centre lies 927 metres above sea level and overlooks the upper Basento Valley. Several themes can guide your choice of travel dates: architectural details in the town centre, festivities held in May, and a landscape of forests and nature trails. You can therefore tailor your search for a hotel in Pignola to your own travel interests.

Squares and Architectural History

Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II features notable palazzi and elegant portals. Architectural details include caryatids and telamones, mascarons, figurative corbels and wrought-iron balconies. Caryatids and telamones are sculpted supports; mascarons are mask-like faces. These terms help distinguish the different forms found on the buildings.

One specific example is the Portale Ciasca. It is designed in the Barocchetto or Rococo style and adorned with demon-shaped mascarons. The associated palazzo façade has wrought-iron balconies. Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore reveals another historical layer: it was rebuilt in 1784 on the foundations of a Romanesque church.

The Madonna del Pantano is housed in the Santuario di Maria Santissima degli Angeli. The image is carved from wood and gilded; Geronimo Arnone created it between 1577 and 1587. The location, the image’s name, its material and the period in which it was created offer a distinct point of interest alongside the buildings in the centre.

May Traditions and Procession

La Uglia di Pignola takes place every year on the third Sunday in May. The Festa delle Uglia includes a street spectacle with broom fires and a fabric Guglia, carried through the historic centre by bearers. The image of the Madonna can be seen on it. Both the fire and the carried Guglia are therefore part of the celebration described.

The annual celebration in honour of Maria Santissima degli Angeli runs from the third Saturday to the fourth Sunday in May. On the morning of the third Sunday, a procession travels from the Santuario di Pantano to the Chiesa Madre di Pignola. The third Sunday is therefore the shared date: the Uglia takes place then, and the procession mentioned also takes place that morning. If you plan to travel for one of the celebrations, check the event dates before your trip.

Landscape and Nature Trails

Pignola’s varied landscape includes the beech forests of Rifreddo, chestnut groves and extensive stands of silver fir and red fir. Lago Pantano has equipped nature trails; the area is a regional nature reserve and a WWF oasis. The town centre and the surrounding landscape thus offer different themes for planning your trip: historic buildings and May traditions on the one hand, and forests and nature trails on the other.

Industrial History, Rural Life and a Product from Pignola

The former mills, now out of use, were once powered by Pignola’s streams. As an example of industrial archaeology, they point to the former use of water power. Another historical theme is presented at the Museo scenografico del Costume e della Civiltà rurale, which conveys rural life in the 19th and 20th centuries through traditional costumes and two reconstructed scenes. The items on display include traditional costumes from various places in Basilicata, yarns and the tools used to make them, as well as everyday objects and agricultural implements.

The Fagiolo rosso scritto del Pantano di Pignola is also part of the local picture. It is associated with special methods of processing, preservation and ageing. These details complement the architectural and nature themes with a product whose distinctive character also lies in how it is processed.
