Other highlights include a historic sarcophagus and a designated stop on an official cycling route. If you are looking for a hotel in Rapolla, these themes can help you decide what to focus on during your trip—from architectural history to thermal offerings and cultural landscapes.
Churches and architectural history in Rapolla
The Cattedrale di Rapolla still preserves important artistic and architectural features from the Middle Ages. The listed furnishings include a wooden crucifix from the 13th century and a painting of the Immaculate Conception from the second half of the 16th century. The different periods bring together distinct eras of religious art in a single building.
The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was Rapolla’s first cathedral. Its floor plan is shaped like a Greek cross and is connected to a three-aisled basilica. The portal also has specific architectural features: it has a double round arch and door jambs with decorated capitals. The floor plan and portal thus stand out as distinct aspects of the building’s design.
At the Chiesa del Crocifisso, architectural history and former use intersect. The church was built over an older medieval rock-cut crypt and was later used by the Benedictines. The Chiesa di San Biagio adds to this picture of Rapolla’s churches with a wooden Madonna from the 13th century and paintings from the 14th century.
Another feature of the townscape is the Porta dell’Annunziata. This medieval gate with a pointed arch is Rapolla’s main entrance. Those interested in historic architectural styles will also find a secular building with a clearly defined function and form alongside the churches.
Cave dwellings, wine and an ancient find
Parco Urbano delle Cantine includes, among other things, cave dwellings of the Arbëreshë community, which were excavated in the tuff. Some of these dwellings are still used to store Aglianico del Vulture wine.
The Sarcofago di Rapolla is also part of the town’s history. It was found in 1856 in Contrada Albero in Piano, in the territory of Rapolla. The sarcophagus is made of Asia Minor marble and is classified as a columnar type. Its findspot, material and form give it a distinct place alongside the medieval architecture and cultural landscape of the Cantine.
Thermal baths and other travel interests
The Terme di Rapolla are supplied by two springs that rise in Contrada Orto del Lago. Treatments on offer include mud therapy, the nebulization of thermal water with aerosol treatments, inhalations and nasal irrigation, drinking cures, and thermal baths. Treatments and operating conditions may vary; check the latest information about available services before making specific plans.
Rapolla is also designated as a stop on the official “Vino e colline” cycling route.
An event in Parco Urbano delle Cantine was considered a classic fixture of the Lucanian autumn.
