Rotonda combines natural attractions with a varied historic townscape. The Grotta dell’Eremita and the Grotta della Voragine are natural caves associated with the town. Churches, fountains and routes through the old town offer further ways to explore its history. The town also has palaeontological finds and an annual festival held in August. You can shape your stay around the landscape, architectural history, town routes or regional produce.

Natural Caves and the Sanctuary

The Grotta dell’Eremita and the Grotta della Voragine are two specific points of interest for exploring Rotonda’s natural heritage. The location of the Santuario di Santa Maria della Consolazione is also clear: it lies about 1 kilometre from Rotonda and can be reached via a stone-paved avenue. The distance is approximate; the paved approach is part of the described route to the sanctuary.

Churches, Architectural History and a Noble Residence

Madonna del Rosario is considered Rotonda’s oldest religious building. It was built approximately between 1100 and 1200. The construction period of the Santuario di Santa Maria della Consolazione is more precisely documented: work began in 1558 and was completed in 1574. These are two distinct historical reference points: an approximate date for the oldest religious building and a church whose construction is dated by year.

The Chiesa Natività was built in the first half of the 18th century. Its central nave has a vault painted with biblical scenes. The Chiesa dell’Annunciazione also offers a connection between architectural history and a surviving feature: a pipe organ remains there. Members of the Confraternita di Sant’Antonio built the church; its date of around 1700 is approximate.

Palazzo Tancredi is a noble residence on Corso Garibaldi. A great military commander stayed there, and a plaque on the main façade commemorates him. If you would like to visit the palazzo, check access arrangements in advance, as visiting conditions may change.

Fountains and Routes Through Rotonda

There are two named routes for different interests. The “della pietra” route runs along the lanes of the historic old town. The “delle acque” route takes you to notable fountains carved by stonemason Giuseppe Di Consoli. He was the last representative of a centuries-old tradition. The two routes therefore focus on different themes: the lanes of the historic centre and fountain art.

Fontana Susu, the former washhouse, offers another glimpse into the town’s history. Three stone water spouts shaped like lions’ heads are part of the structure. In the newer part of Rotonda, there is also the Fontana monumentale dell’Elefante: an elephant sculpture that recalls the elephants that lived in this area in prehistoric times. This motif connects with the prehistoric finds on display at the Museo naturalistico e paleontologico.

Palaeontological Finds and Opening Hours

The Museo naturalistico e paleontologico displays the remains of a specimen of Elephas antiquus italicus from the Middle to Upper Pleistocene, dating from 400,000 to 700,000 years ago. Another find is an almost complete jaw of Hippopotamus antiquus. This animal probably lived during the Middle Pleistocene. The two exhibits offer distinct points of interest in palaeontology; the dating of the hippopotamus is explicitly presented as probable.

The Museo naturalistico e paleontologico is listed as open daily from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00. Check these hours before travelling. This will help you plan your museum visit alongside the other stops during your stay.

An August Festival Celebrating Regional Produce

Held annually in August, the “Il Bianco e la Rossa DOP” festival puts Melanzana Rossa DOP di Rotonda and Fagiolo di Rotonda DOP in the spotlight. The exact festival dates may vary, so it is worth checking the schedule before making plans. Alongside the churches, fountains and palaeontological finds, the festival offers another distinct way to experience Rotonda—through two named regional products.
