Tolve: Sanctuary, History and Regional Cuisine
Accommodation in Tolve
Tolve can be explored through a range of themes: the Santuario di San Rocco and its pilgrimage traditions, traces from different periods, the landscape and regional cuisine. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, these highlights can help you identify the interests that will shape your stay.
Santuario di San Rocco and Pilgrimage Traditions
The Santuario di San Rocco is located on Largo Duomo. The building dates from the 12th century and was extensively expanded in the 18th century. This created a three-aisled building with a magnificent dome above the apse. The interior is also decorated in the Baroque style and adorned with fine stucco work and valuable works of art. “Three-aisled” describes the interior layout with three naves; together with the dome, this design is a distinctive result of the extensive renovation.
The FestivitĂ di San Rocco includes celebrations on 16 August and 16 September. These include processions through the streets of the historic old town, during which worshippers carry the statue of the saint. The annual programme may vary. So if you want to plan your trip around a celebration, check the programme for the relevant year.
The “Percorsi Rocchiani” form a network of routes that connects nature and spirituality. The routes lead to the sanctuary from various places in Basilicata and neighbouring regions. Tolve is also the destination of a strong pilgrimage tradition: every year, thousands of pilgrims reach the diocesan sanctuary dedicated to the miraculous San Rocco, most of them on foot. The celebrations and the network of routes illustrate two different aspects of the connection between religious practice and the journey to the sanctuary.
Local History and Historic Sites
The Arco delle Torri marks the entrance to the medieval village of Tolve. The arch is incorporated into the 12th-century town walls. Another historic site is the Villa Romana di San Pietro, located west of Monte Stallone and overlooking the ancient “Tratturo Regio.” The two sites offer different geographical reference points for Tolve’s history, from the entrance to the medieval village to the ancient route.
The religious buildings also reflect different periods. The Monastery of San Francesco was completed in 1586. The Church of San Pietro dates back to its foundation by Benedictine monks in the second half of the 11th century. Traces of Neolithic settlements dating from 2800 to 2500 BC have also been found in Tolve at the foot of Monte Moltone. Taken together, these sites span a period from prehistoric settlement traces through medieval architectural history to later religious buildings.
The Landscape and Cuisine of Tolve
The landscape around Tolve is characterised by extensive grain fields, interspersed with olive groves and remnants of ancient woodland. The wooded mountains surrounding the village provide a habitat for various animal species, including the Apennine wolf and wild boar. Agricultural land and wooded mountain scenery are thus different features of the surrounding area.
Traditional Tolve cuisine includes homemade pasta, local meat and pulses. Wild-growing cardoons often feature in hearty dishes, which are prepared especially for feast days. The connection between feast days and particular foods is another part of the regional tradition. You can use these themes to plan your trip: religious heritage, the town’s earlier history, the landscape or culinary traditions. If you are travelling for the San Rocco celebrations, also take the programme for the relevant year into account when planning your trip.
