Trivigno lies on a promontory overlooking the Basento Valley and is surrounded by greenery. Its churches and local storytelling tradition also shape the town. If you choose a destination for its historical and landscape-related themes, you will find a range of points of interest here: buildings from several centuries, a distinctive local figure, and places to visit in the surrounding area.

Churches and History in Trivigno

The Chiesa Madre di San Pietro Apostolo dates back to 1600. Another historical milestone is the “L. Carelli” organ, most recently restored in 2013. At the Chiesa di San Rocco, religious devotion and local history come together: it was built after the plague of 1657 out of devotion to Saint Roch, who is regarded as the patron saint of plague victims. The church probably dates from the second half of the 17th century.

The marble altar of San Rocco also tells of a later period in history. The polychrome altar was built in 1887 with donations from residents of Trivigno who had emigrated to America. Thus, devotion to Saint Roch and the connection to emigrant residents come together in this building, though the two dates do not refer to the same phase of construction.

The Cappella di Sant’Antonio Abate is also known as the “Madonna del Carmine.” It is located in the Casale district, in one of the village’s lanes. Both the name Casale and its location among the village streets help identify its setting. The Chiesa di San Rocco and this chapel also represent different forms of religious remembrance: one is dedicated to devotion to the patron saint, while the other is a chapel with another commonly used name.

The Cappella di Sant’Antonio da Padova offers a different architectural description. It has a single-nave plan and a flat-ended apse area; inside is a painting depicting a miracle of Saint Anthony. “Single-nave” describes a plan with one main nave, while the flat end further characterizes the apse area. The Chiesa rupestre di Santa Maria in the Leo district adds a rock-hewn church dating from the first decades of the 14th century to this picture. The churches therefore differ both in their recorded histories and in their architecture.

Local Tradition: Il Pulminale

Il Pulminale, a figure capable of changing shape, belongs to the local magical tradition. The historic district of Pulminara is associated with this figure, and its name derives from it. Il Pulminale was one of the main characters in local tales of fear told to adults and children. The motif links a specific place name with stories that played a part in the local tradition for different age groups. Those interested in a destination’s cultural side will find not only architectural history here, but also a distinctive local character from its storytelling tradition.

Landscape and Places to Visit in the Region

Its position on a promontory and views over the Basento Valley define Trivigno’s landscape. Nearby is the Parco Regionale di Gallipoli Cognato e Piccole Dolomiti Lucane, which is suitable for hiking, horseback riding, and cycling. These activities offer a different focus from a tour of the town’s historical sites. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on Trivigno’s churches and traditions or also include activities in the nearby area.

Another geographical point of reference is Lago di Ponte Fontanelle, also called Diga della Camastra. It lies in a valley between the municipalities of Trivigno, Anzi, Albano di Lucania, and Laurenzana. Diga della Camastra is another name for the same lake. Together with the views over the Basento Valley, this landscape offers a second perspective on the surroundings: the lake is defined by its location between several municipalities, while the park is characterized by the activities available there. Churches, storytelling tradition, and landscape thus offer several concrete themes to guide your choice of destination.
