Viggianello offers nature and cultural experiences that can be organized around specific interests. These include trails in Pollino National Park, Serra Mauro with its mixed forest and observation huts, churches with Byzantine influences, and the Riti arborei. When planning your stay, you can choose different priorities: a hike, deer watching, architecture, or local festival traditions. Planning depends both on seasonal changes in trail conditions and on the dates of each festival.

Trails, Forest and Deer Watching

Pollino National Park lists a moderately difficult trail from Viggianello to Colle dell'Abete, rated E. Another designated trail in Viggianello runs from Rifugio De Gasperi to Belvedere di Malvento and is rated T. The two hikes differ in their destinations and ratings. Conditions and signage on both park trails can vary by season; check the current trail conditions before setting out.

A trail near the town’s amphitheater climbs to Serra Mauro, at 1,550 meters, and passes through a mixed forest dominated by holm oaks. The trail to Serra Mauro leads to observation huts, from which you can watch deer reintroduced since 2002. The area therefore offers more than hiking, with a specific focus for anyone interested in wildlife.

Water and Industrial History

The source of the Mercure River is in Viggianello. Another connection to water is the Fratelli Tancredi hydroelectric power station, built in 1929. Rafting is another local activity: Infopollino Centro Escursioni lists it as a water activity in Viggianello. If you would like to include rafting in your plans, ask the center about the specific arrangements.

Churches, Art and Archaeological Heritage

The Madonna dell'Alto Sanctuary is on Monte dell'Alto, 970 meters above sea level. According to tradition, it was built toward the end of the 18th century following a miracle; the year 1775 is also engraved on the entrance portal. The sanctuary is therefore notable both for its mountain setting and for its religious tradition.

The Church of the Santissima Trinità has a basilian dome, shows traces of Byzantine influence, and contains several frescoes that have re-emerged. The Church of San Francesco di Paola retains its east-west orientation, as traditionally found in Byzantine churches. It is also an important focal point in Viggianello because of its significance during the Riti arborei. Together, the two churches represent different aspects: architectural and artistic features as well as a cultural role in the annual calendar.

The Archaeological Park of the Caves comprises around 18 rock formations outside the built-up area and is of considerable historical and archaeological value. The Convent of Sant'Antonio offers a distinct artistic highlight: it houses a white marble sculpture of the Madonna and Child by Pietro Bernini.

Riti arborei and their dates

In Viggianello, the Riti arborei in honor of Saint Francis of Paola take place during the fourth week of August. In Pedali, the Feast of Saint Francis of Paola takes place during the first week after Easter and includes elaborate Riti arborei. The “pitu” and “cuccagna” trees are transported into the village by oxen. The dates differ: the celebration in Pedali follows Easter, while the Riti arborei in Viggianello take place in August. If you would like to plan your trip around either tradition, check the exact dates in advance.
