Catanzaro lies at Italy’s narrowest point, between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts. The city can be explored through several distinct themes: art collections and musical history, religious buildings and traces of the Norman castle, as well as a large park and regional cuisine. From the belvedere, the view stretches across the Fiumarella Valley to the Gulf of Squillace. If you’re looking for a hotel in Catanzaro, these different highlights can help you plan your trip.

Art, Music and Remembrance

MARCA brings together different artistic styles, from ancient to contemporary art. Its collection includes around 120 paintings and sculptures, as well as a permanent Rotella collection; spaces for temporary exhibitions complement the offerings. The Museo del Rock takes a different approach: it is dedicated to the golden age of rock ’n’ roll in the 1950s and 1960s. On display are more than 10,000 original vinyl records, contemporary posters, historic magazines and rare memorabilia. The museum also offers guided listening sessions featuring original vinyl records. If you’d like to take part, check in advance for a suitable time.

Casa della Memoria also brings together different aspects: it is located in Catanzaro’s historic Jewish quarter and is both a birthplace, a museum and a venue for contemporary art. MUSMI – Museo Storico Militare Brigata Catanzaro is devoted to more than two centuries of military history, from the Napoleonic era to the Second World War. Documentary materials from Archivio Luce are shown continuously on screens throughout the museum.

Religious Buildings and Traces of the Castle

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta was built in the 12th century and restored several times. It houses a 16th-century Madonna and Child by Antonello Gagini of Messina. The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1254 in the heart of Catanzaro. Both buildings mark distinct periods in the city’s history.

The monumental San Giovanni complex was built between the 15th and 17th centuries on the remains of the old Norman castle. Its large exhibition area spans two floors. The Norman Tower is the surviving remnant of Catanzaro’s old castle. The castle’s ancient dungeons are also part of the complex; visits have been possible since 2017. Check current access arrangements before your visit. For a different perspective on theatre history, there is the Teatro Politeama: Paolo Portoghesi designed it as a contemporary reinterpretation of theatrical tradition. Its varied programme includes opera, dance, drama and symphony concerts. If you have a particular performance in mind, it’s worth checking the schedule.

Park, Views and the Coast

The Parco della BiodiversitĂ  Mediterranea covers 60 hectares and combines biodiversity with cultural, scientific, sporting and leisure activities. Nature trails, educational areas and observation areas are joined by the Parco Internazionale della Scultura, an open-air gallery of contemporary art in the park. Art outdoors and a connection with nature come together here in one place, without the park being devoted to just one type of use.

The gardens of Villa Trieste feature rare plants and statues of notable figures from Calabria. Another view awaits you at the Catanzaro belvedere: from there, you can see the Fiumarella Valley and the Gulf of Squillace. Catanzaro Lido stretches along the Ionian coast on the Gulf of Squillace. Its seafront is home to numerous bathing establishments, hotels and restaurants.

Regional Cuisine

U Murzeddhu is a slow-cooked tripe dish with a spicy sauce and is part of local culinary tradition. Malvasia di Catanzaro is a wine associated with Catanzaro. Together, these two examples offer a glimpse of a regional food culture that adds another facet to a trip alongside its art and history.
