Acri: Discover churches, museums and nature
Accommodation in Acri
Acri combines religious heritage, art and everyday culture with nature above the town. Churches and historic buildings stand alongside museums devoted to rural life, art and cultural traditions. Parco Serra Crista adds forest and panoramic trails to these attractions; there are also various outdoor activities around Acri. You can choose the focus of your stay based on your interest in history, culture or landscapes.
Churches, architecture and history
The Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata was first mentioned in historical records in 1269 by Bishop Ruffino. Its Romanesque floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross with three naves. In the left aisle is a Crucifixion, considered a small masterpiece. This brings together a historical reference, architectural form and a particularly distinctive work of art in a single church.
The Basilica del Beato Angelo da Acri stands out for its size and interior: its dome is 32 metres high, as are its two bell towers. Twelve noble chapels are arranged in two rows. In the central chapel is a waterproof bronze-and-glass urn containing the saint’s reconstructed body. The Basilica di Sant’Angelo also forms part of the city’s religious heritage. It is a Baroque church and is considered the most important place of worship in Acri.
Further historical connections can be found in various buildings. The birthplace of Beato Angelo in the Casalicchio district was converted into a chapel in 1930; the Museo del Beato Angelo is housed in the Capuchin monastery. Palazzo Padula was once the home of the writer and poet Vincenzo Padula. Torre del Castello Normanno, also known as Torre di Padia, was formerly a watchtower and part of the Norman castle that dominated Acri. The tower also preserves a clock mechanism made by local craftspeople in the 18th century.
Museums and cultural collections
Acri’s museums each focus on different subjects. The Museo della civiltà contadina has six exhibition rooms and preserves about 500 objects from rural and artisanal life. At the Museo del Risorgimento „G.B. Falcone“, panels and historical photographs illustrate important moments of the 19th century. The Museo dei costumi Arbereshe is devoted to the traditional clothing of Italy’s Albanian minority.
Since 2006, MACA has housed Silvio Vigliaturo’s permanent collection. It is located in Palazzo Sanseverino, built between 1707 and 1717 and decorated by Donato Vitale and his pupils. The art collection and the building offer two distinct reasons to visit MACA: the collection on permanent display and the history of the palazzo. The Museo Micologico Permanente di Acri preserves freeze-dried mushrooms; the process maintains their essential biomorphological characteristics over a long period.
Feast day and cuisine
The Festa di San Giuseppe is held annually on 19 March. It includes a procession of the statue at the Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata, solemn Masses, and market stalls along Corso Pertini and in Piazza Matteotti. The detailed programme may change; check the event dates before your trip.
Acri’s cuisine includes handmade cavati served with meat or mushroom sauce, as well as patate ’mpacchiuse. These dishes add a regional culinary tradition to the cultural and historical attractions, without implying any particular restaurant or tasting offer.
Forest and activities around Acri
Above Acri, Parco Serra Crista sits at an altitude of about 1,125 metres. Its forest consists of black pines and chestnut trees, and it also has panoramic trails. Around Acri, there are trails in the Sila National Park, as well as opportunities for trekking, skiing, canyoning and other outdoor sports. These activities broaden the range of options beyond churches and museums, although they do not all start directly in Acri. Seasonal activities may not always be available, and trail conditions can also change; check before planning your visit.
