Altomonte offers several ways to enjoy a stay focused on history and nature. Its medieval town layout has been preserved, alongside churches, museums, a woodland park, and a program of events. These attractions range from architectural history and art to landscapes and cultural events.

Townscape and Architectural History

Castello Feudale features a panoramic loggia oriented toward the Pollino massif. Its orientation creates a distinctive connection between the building and the landscape. Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione was built around 1336 at the behest of Filippo Sangineto, the first Count of Altomonte. The church contains the tomb monument of the Sangineto family.

The Convento dei Domenicani also adds to the town’s architectural history. It was built in the 15th century at the behest of Cobella Ruffo Sanseverino. The restored monastery has housed the Museo Civico since 1980. Altomonte’s buildings therefore span several centuries: the church dates to around 1336, and the monastery to the 15th century.

Art and Collections

The Museo Civico preserves “San Ladislao” by Simone Martini, a panel painting from 1326. The painting was created about a decade before construction of Chiesa di Santa Maria della Consolazione.

The Museo Franco Azzinari’s “Vent’anni con la natura” collection comprises 40 significant works by the artist. Four rooms are dedicated to his Cuban works. Torre Pallotta, restored in 1991, now serves as an exhibition venue for Calabrian artist Franco Azzinari. If you plan a museum visit, check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Woodland Park and Events

Parco comunale naturale del Farneto is a municipal woodland park of about 200 hectares. Parco Comunale del Farneto G. De Rosa contains an artificial lake that covers approximately eight hectares of the park. There are equipped picnic and barbecue areas there. The lake therefore occupies only part of the much larger woodland park.

The Festival Euromediterraneo takes place every year in Altomonte’s Borgo, although dates and programming may vary from year to year. Teatro Belluscio hosts events, performances, and cultural initiatives throughout the year; specific schedules may change. If you are planning to travel for a festival or performance, base your travel dates on the latest dates and programs.

Altomonte can be reached via the A3 Salerno–Reggio Calabria motorway and the exit of the same name. From there, the route continues for 10 km along a provincial road. As route conditions may change, it is advisable to check directions before setting off. This helps you plan both your journey and, if your stay is tied to a specific event date, the period of your visit.
