Whether you want to plan your stay around cultural history or nature excursions, Castrovillari offers different perspectives: historic buildings and collections are just as much in focus as trails in the Pollino area. This makes it easy to explore the city’s distinctive features according to your own interests.

Cultural history in Castrovillari

Castello Aragonese was completed in 1490 and follows the fortified architectural style of the southern Renaissance. After its restoration in 1995, it was returned to the city as a cultural space. Protoconvento Francescano tells another chapter in the city’s history: it was founded in 1220 as a convent of the Friars Minor and now houses the Sistema Museale della Città di Castrovillari, or SiMuCCà for short. The museum complex presents the history, art and traditions of the Castrovillari area.

The Museo Civico documents the historical heritage of Castrovillari and its surroundings through artefacts and archaeological finds. Its timeline spans from prehistory to the early Middle Ages. Visitors interested in longer-term historical developments will find a different perspective here than in buildings whose history can be traced through specific dates and architectural features.

Sacred art and local collections

The Basilica pontificia minore di San Giuliano dates to the 12th century and is first mentioned in a Greek-language notarial deed from 1249. It houses the Museo d’Arte Sacra, with paintings, sculptures, silverwork and liturgical objects from the 16th century. The time gap between the basilica’s origins and the artworks reveals two distinct historical layers. The oldest part of the Basilica Pontificia Minore Santa Maria del Castello is a Norman crypt.

The Pinacoteca Andrea Alfano is dedicated to local artist Andrea Alfano (1879–1967). Its collection comprises more than 300 paintings, drawings and sculptures, spanning from his earliest works in the late 19th century to his final paintings from the mid-20th century. If you plan to include the Pinacoteca in your visit, check access arrangements in advance. The Convento delle Pentite also houses Giuseppe Marulli’s painting “Madonna col Bambino tra Santa Maria Maddalena e Santa Maria Egiziaca,” created between 1635 and 1637.

La Civita and the trails in the Pollino area

The municipal description, updated on 30 July 2025, describes La Civita as the old town, separate from the rest of Castrovillari. It is situated on a limestone spur; narrow lanes and distinctive buildings characterize the neighbourhood. La Civita can be reached on foot or by wheelchair via a paved road.

Castrovillari lies at the foot of the Pollino massif and is considered the largest urban centre in Pollino National Park. The city is a good starting point for nature excursions and guided visits. Each of the routes described has its own destination: C.A.I. Trail 920 starts in the woods above the Botanical Garden and leads to the slopes of Monte Pollino. The nature trail C.A.I. 921 A runs through Conca del Re and ends at Sella del Campanaro, a viewpoint overlooking the Pollino mountains and the wide valley of Castrovillari.

Another route, C.A.I. Trail 921, leads from Castrovillari via Madonna del Riposo to the summit of Monte Sant’Angelo. The trails therefore differ mainly in the landscapes and endpoints described: woodland and mountain slopes, a viewpoint over mountains and valley, or a summit. This distinction offers more concrete guidance for planning a trip than a general search for hiking routes.

Cycling and pilgrimage routes are also part of the surrounding area. The section of the Ciclovia dei Parchi della Calabria from Morano Calabro to San Donato di Ninea passes through the Castrovillari area in Pollino National Park. The Via per la Francia section of the Cammino di San Francesco di Paola runs from Corigliano Calabro to Monte Sant’Angelo in Castrovillari; it is listed as 71.6 kilometres long and divided into three stages.

Festivals and theatre

The events calendar offers more reasons to get to know Castrovillari. Carnevale di Castrovillari is a recurring public festival featuring music, dance, tradition, allegorical parades, floats, folk dances and international performances; an edition for 2026 is listed. Primavera dei Teatri takes place annually and focuses on new languages in contemporary theatre. The city also lists a 2026 edition of this festival, which has been running for more than twenty years.

The Festival della Cipolla Bianca di Castrovillari features debates, masterclasses and field visits centred on the white onion, which has been recognised with the DE.CO. designation since 2022. Its fourth edition is listed for 2026. During the Christmas season, the recurring Primafila theatre series takes place at Teatro Sybaris; its 2026 programme period is also listed. The municipal description of Teatro Sybaris, updated on 30 July 2025, identifies it as a centre for theatre activities and states that it has around 300 seats in the gallery and stalls. If a festival is the reason for your trip, check the dates of the relevant edition before making plans.
