Diamante offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: the art of the historic old town, the Chiesa Madre, maritime themes and Calabrian chili culture. There is also a coastal landscape with volcanic cliffs and picturesque coves. If you are looking for a hotel in Diamante, you can decide above all by which of these local features you want to shape your stay.

Murals and History in the Old Town

Since 1981, the historic old town has featured more than 300 works of art and murals, forming an open-air museum. The collection may change as additional works are added. A work by Pietro Giavini represents the beginning of the first “Operazione Murales” in Diamante in 1981. The initiative itself thus becomes part of the town’s history: the date marks its beginning, while the many works reflect the artistic presence in the old town.

A mosaic created in 1981 by Michele and Angiolina Sposito from Ferrara presents a visual chronicle of the history of Calabria. The chronicle ranges from the Paleolithic “Toro di Papasidero” to the modern coastal town and its fishing and farming traditions. This arc through time connects regional history with coastal culture and adds a coherent narrative to the view of the individual murals.

The Chiesa Madre and Its Art

Diamante’s Chiesa Madre is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and was built in 1645 at the behest of Prince Tiberio Carafa. The church also houses paintings by Prassede Grimaldi, an artist from Diamante. Its dedication, year of construction and patron give the building a clear historical connection; the paintings add a link to a local artist. Alongside the art in the historic town center, the church represents a distinct aspect of Diamante shaped by its history.

The Sea, Cirella and the Coastal Landscape

The Acquario Multimediale Il Diamante uses images and films to present the marine ecosystems of Diamante and Cirella. It also covers typical underwater flora and fauna and the distinctive features of Cirella Island. Its focus is therefore on explanatory media and natural subjects. Diamante’s beaches include volcanic cliffs and picturesque coves. The aquarium and the description of the coastline offer different perspectives on the sea: one on marine habitats and Cirella, the other on the distinctive coastal landscape.

Chili Culture and the Peperoncino Festival

Diamante is considered a center of Calabrian chili culture. The Peperoncino Festival shows that its program includes a range of cultural and specialist formats as well as culinary themes. These include performances, exhibitions, medical conferences, drawing in the ring, films and the historic finale of the “Campionato Italiano Mangiatori di Peperoncino.” Program items may vary from one edition to another.

For the 2026 edition, the festival area “Mangiare Mediterraneo” on Diamante’s historic waterfront promenade presents Calabrian specialties and new creations rooted in artisanal tradition. The area adds a specific culinary perspective to the event formats. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates and program for the edition relevant to you.
