Lakes, plant life, farming tools and everyday objects, church architecture and chestnuts offer different points of interest when considering Fagnano Castello as a destination for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel, these local themes can help you weigh up your interests in nature and culture for your trip.

Lakes and plant life

Lago dei Due Uomini is the largest lake in a complex of small lakes in the Catena Costiera. It lies in the municipality of Fagnano Castello, in the Province of Cosenza. At around two hectares, it is also Calabria’s largest natural lake. These size descriptions place it in two contexts: within the lake complex and in regional comparison.

A decree issued by the Italian Ministry of the Environment on 3 April 2000 recognized the lakes of Fagnano and Monte Caloria as Sites of Community Importance (SCIs).

Lago Trifoglietti is scientifically significant for another reason: its distinctive plant species include Osmunda regalis, whose fronds can grow up to 180 centimetres long. While the emphasis at Due Uomini is on its area and place in the lake complex, at Trifoglietti the focus is on plant life.

Museum: work and everyday life

The Museo della civiltà contadina di Fagnano Castello preserves local tools and equipment from farming, shepherding, traditional crafts and everyday life. The collection includes an old loom and two more modern treadle sewing machines. It is complemented by objects relating to wine and oil production, as well as agricultural and pastoral tools. The selection combines practical work equipment with objects related to processing and everyday life, spanning textile work and agricultural and pastoral activities.

Churches and architectural history

The Chiesa dell’Immacolata was remodelled in the Baroque period over an earlier church building. The interior of the Chiesa di San Pietro Apostolo is richly decorated with stucco in a Baroque-inspired style. The two churches therefore differ in their architectural emphasis: the Immacolata is notable for being remodelled over an older church building, while San Pietro stands out for its interior design.

A dated stage of the Sentiero Italia

A stage of the Sentiero Italia, SI UCS 805, began on 16 March 2019 in Pietrabianca (Fagnano Castello) and led to Passo dello Scalone in Sangineto. It was 23.4 kilometres long and graded E. Its length and grade provide two specific details about the stage. If you are considering a hike, check the trail conditions and signage in advance.

Chestnuts in local cuisine

In Fagnano Castello, chestnuts are boiled as Ballotte or Ballucci, roasted as Caldarroste, and used in desserts and preserves. If local food culture is also part of your travel decision, this chestnut tradition offers a specific point of interest alongside the lakes and architectural history.
