Frascineto: Arbëresh Culture and Pollino
Accommodation in Frascineto
Frascineto and the hamlet of Eianina lie in the Pollino National Park. Both preserve the Albanian language and the Greek-Byzantine rite. The town thus brings together the Pollino landscape and a distinctive cultural tradition. When planning your trip, you can focus on museums and sacred sites on the one hand, and circular trails and sport climbing on the other.
Culture and Easter traditions
In Frascineto, the Vallje are celebrated on the Tuesday after Easter with traditional Albanian dances and songs. On the second Sunday after Easter, worshippers from Frascineto and Eianina make a votive visit to the Eremo della Madonna di Lassù. Cultural tradition is thus linked to both feast days and religious customs.
Museums: icons, traditional dress and everyday culture
The Museo delle Icone e della Tradizione Bizantina is dedicated to Byzantine art, spirituality, history and liturgy. It has an inner and an outer circuit; its icon collection spans the 15th to the 20th century.
The Museo del Costume Albanese is dedicated to miniature traditional costumes of the Albanian-speaking communities of southern Italy. As of March 2025, the museum was undergoing renovation. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
The Museo Etnografico Arbëresh focuses on objects from the material everyday culture of earlier times. Traditional textile processing is explained in practice at a loom; visits are by appointment.
Sacred sites and architectural forms
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di Santa Maria Assunta has a Greek-Byzantine iconostasis and a Byzantine altar beneath a masonry cupola canopy. The Chiesa di San Pietro dates from the 10th century, is a Byzantine national monument and has three naves. Unusually, it faces west rather than east. North of Frascineto lies the Eremo della Madonna di Lassù, set into the mountain rock. It once contained cells for Basilian monks.
Circular trails and sport climbing in the Pollino
A circular trail through the “Piccole Dolomiti di Frascineto” starts on the edge of Eianina at an altitude of about 450 metres. The area is Geosite 15 in the Pollino mountain range. After the paved mule track, the circular trail continues uphill along a steep path on the western slope of Timpa di Crivo. Route SI-C U33-B passes through Eianina and continues to Frascineto’s sports ground.
For sport climbing, the rock face at Frascineto-Eianina in Pollino National Park is equipped with a climbing wall. The outdoor activities described therefore differ: the circular trail is characterised by its starting point and steep section, while route SI-C U33-B is characterised by its course to the sports ground.
