Fuscaldo: Church Art and Tuff Stone Portals
Accommodation in Fuscaldo
There are several different themes to explore during a stay in Fuscaldo: sacred art and architecture, a signposted local network of trails, and a beach in Fuscaldo Marina. The town’s cultural character is reflected in different kinds of traces: dates, paintings, reliefs and architectural features. This makes Fuscaldo interesting for travelers who plan their vacation around specific cultural or outdoor interests.
Church Art and Architectural History
The Chiesa Matrice was already in existence in 1166. On June 5 of that same year, Riccardo, Archbishop of Cosenza, consecrated its main altar in honor of the Apostle James the Greater. This precise date places the church within local history. Its chapels also contain paintings by Genesio Gualtieri da Mormanno and G. Battista Santoro. History and painting thus emerge at the same church as two distinct aspects.
The Chiesa dell’Immacolata has a bell tower about 35 meters high, built by stonemasons from Fuscaldo. Its distinctive features include twelve fluted tuff stone columns with Corinthian capitals. Fluting consists of lengthwise grooves in a column’s shaft; the capital is its ornamented upper section. The tower’s height, material and column style therefore offer several architectural features by which to describe its design.
The date of the Chiesa di San Giuseppe is expressly uncertain: it probably dates from around 1700. This differs from the exact year 1166 given for the Chiesa Matrice. At the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Rosario, painting and sculpture come together: two works are by Antonio Berté, including “L’Ultima Cena.” A depiction of the Stations of the Cross in bas-relief was created by the sculptor Antonio Ricci. In a bas-relief, the image projects only slightly from its background—a different artistic form from a painting.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Nuovo is an 18th-century oratory that was inhabited by Augustinians. Beside the main entrance is a medieval remnant of a cross-shaped column shaft. Here, an oratory with a historical dating and an older architectural fragment can be viewed as traces from different periods.
Hiking Trails, Beach and Anchovies
Fuscaldo’s local trail network comprises five mapped and signposted hiking trails. This information provides a practical starting point for planning your outings. Confirm the trail network locally before departure, before choosing a particular route.
Fuscaldo Marina has a beach with sunset views. Another local feature is the focus of the Festival delle Alici: this food festival celebrates anchovies from Fuscaldo. The beach and festival offer different highlights—the sunset views here, and a festival centered on a specific product from Fuscaldo there.
