Longobardi brings together a coastal landscape, a historic village and mountain scenery. This offers several clear focal points for planning your trip: you can explore the area through its historic heritage, views of the sea or wooded landscapes. If you take both culture and nature into account when choosing a destination, you’ll find specific attractions here in both areas.

Local History and Architecture

The historic center of Longobardi is an agricultural village center dating from the first quarter of the 7th century. Further religious landmarks were added in the 18th century: the Chiesa Matrice was built in the Baroque style in 1759 and dedicated to Saint Domenica, virgin and martyr; the birthplace of San Nicola Saggio was converted into an oratory in 1786.

The Santi Quaranta coastal watchtower is still in fairly good condition and occupies a scenic location overlooking the sea. Its sea views connect the building with the coastal landscape and set it apart from the religious buildings.

Gardens and Landscapes

The 1,200 m² Giardino di San Nicola is part of Palazzo Miceli. It includes a communal oven, a shared De.Co. garden and an area with historic fruit trees. This brings communal garden features together with a special connection to local garden history.

The woodland of Longobardi stretches from the hamlet of Le Pera to the slopes of Monte Cocuzzo. The pine forest of Longobardi has several springs, including the Pagliarone spring, and is visited by day-trippers at Easter and in summer.

A Route Through Vallone Cordari

One specific route through the landscape is the Sentiero di San Nicola Saggio. It is about 1,500 m long, starts near the old SS 18 road at Tre Ponti and follows a paved road section to the birthplace of San Nicola Saggio in the historic center. Most of the route runs through Vallone Cordari. Its course and destination at the birthplace bring together nature and local history on one tour. Conditions may vary by season; check them before setting out.

Local Products and Getting There

Local food culture also offers a specific point of interest. Two locally named varieties of Fasulu 'du Piru are distinguished: povareddra and mascariaddru. If you’re interested in local products as well as architecture and landscapes, this distinction offers a specific point of connection.

Amantea railway station is about 7 km from Longobardi, while Paola railway station is about 20 km away. Amantea is therefore the closer of the two stations. These distances give you a sense of their relative locations; check the specific connection for your travel date.
